Queens vs Winthrop College Basketball Preview

Queens Basketball

The Royals are coming off a very big season for the program, making the NCAA Tournament and winning the ASUN Tournament for the first time in program history.

This is just the program's fifth season playing Division I basketball, so things are certainly trending in the right direction with head coach Grant Leonard at the helm.

Queens returns just one starter from a year ago, senior forward Avantae Parker, who averaged 11.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 67% from the floor.

The Royals also bring back sophomore guard Isaiah Henry, who came off the bench last season, averaging just 7.9 minutes and 3.0 points per game.

One transfer with a very high ceiling is former Wingate guard Corbin Pack, a massive perimeter threat coming over from the Division II level. The 6-foot-5 sharpshooter knocked down 40% of his 3-pointers, averaged 10 points per game and connected on 69 3-pointers last season.

If Pack can make the transition to the Division I level, look out, ASUN.

Winthrop Basketball

Winthrop didn't retain a single starter from a year ago, but the Eagles were able to keep Seifeldin Hendawy, who averaged 5.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per game, and Tai Hamilton, who played just 7.7 minutes per game while averaging 2.5 points.

The Eagles also lost stud center Logan Duncomb to Notre Dame, leaving a sizable hole in the frontcourt after falling to High Point in the Big South championship game last season.

To help fill that void, Winthrop brought in former North Dakota big man George Natsvlishvili. The 6-foot-10 senior averaged 8.0 points and 4.9 rebounds while playing nearly 20 minutes per game last season.

Natsvlishvili will need to take a massive leap forward if he's going to come anywhere close to replacing Duncomb's production.

With 10 newcomers joining the program this season, it'll be interesting to see how quickly this group adapts to head coach Mark Prosser's system.

Queens vs. Winthrop Pick, Betting Analysis

The pace of this game is going to be set to ludicrous speed, as both teams love to run, Winthrop especially, which ranked 27th in possessions a year ago.

Prosser loves that downhill style of basketball, the type that wants to kill its opponents with points. Same goes for Leonard and his boys.

Early in the season, I love fast-paced teams. Their legs are fresh and ready to take on the season. But this early in the morning? Sure, these teams have early practices, but a 9 a.m. tipoff is still early.

(Maybe not as early as the poor souls at Grambling and Northern Illinois, who have the privilege of playing six hours before this one.)

Even with the faster pace expected in this ballgame, these two teams have just one returning starter and three returning reserves combined. There's still a lot of chemistry to build within both programs, and I don't see that happening at nine in the morning in Game 1 of the season.

Land down under.
