Monmouth vs Hofstra College Basketball Betting Preview
Monmouth Basketball
It’s rare for a team to get a shot in the arm late in the year as Monmouth did.
Kavion McClain is the best guard on the Hawks roster, and he wasn’t deemed eligible until February 5th.
Since then, the Hawks are 8-2, with McClain averaging 16.7 points and five assists per game.
Per Torvik, Monmouth is the 116th-best team in the country since McClain joined, and 218th without him. The biggest jump is on the offensive end, where the Hawks jumped over 100 spots with the speedy McClain in the mix.
Monmouth has a very offense-driven lineup. All five starters can score in a variety of ways. Andrew Ball and Stefanos Spartalis start at four and five, and both are just 6-foot-9. Ball can shoot the 3, and Spartalis, a freshman from Greece, has scored 10-plus points in four straight games.
Jason Rivera-Torres is a super dynamic wing who's a terrific second option. The 6-foot-7 forward from the Bronx averages over 15 points per game, while adding a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game with 3.2 stocks per game. He's a super-charged glue guy.
Monmouth doesn't have anyone above 6-foot-9, but Rivera-Torres' rebounding ability makes up for it.
Off the bench, the Hawks have another scoring guard in Justin Ray, who can help out.
Hofstra Basketball
Hofstra will look to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. You may remember them winning the CAA title in 2020, but COVID-19 cancelled the tournament.
The Pride needed an overtime thriller in the semis to get here. Freshman stud Preston Edmead banked in a close to 30-footer to win it for Hofstra.
Hofstra is the three-seed in the CAA Tournament, but it was the top-rated team on KenPom for most of the year. The Pride are no strangers to defying logic — they beat Pittsburgh and Syracuse in road games earlier this year.
Good luck scoring on Hofstra on the interior — it holds opponents to 44% shooting on 2s, the third-lowest mark in America. The Pride have an All-League forward in Joshua DeCady and a pair of rim deterrents in 7-footer Silas Sunday and athletic center Victory Onuetu.
The offense will come from the guards, Cruz Davis and Preston Edmead. Davis is an electric scoring guard, averaging 20 points per game while shooting 50% from the field and 40% from deep. Edmead is more than just a single-game hero — the 6-1 freshman averages 15 points and 4.3 assists per game.
The Pride can play some low-scoring games due to their pace and reliance on shooting. They rank 321st in adjusted tempo, which is nothing new for a Speedy Claxton team.
Shooting-wise, Hofstra lets it fly 43% of the time and hits 37% of them.
If the shots don't fall, you can see scores in the 60s, but Hofstra is comfortable in low-scoring games, too.
Monmouth vs. Hofstra Betting Analysis
I like the Under.
Monmouth is a faster-tempo team than Hofstra, but 198th in adjusted tempo isn't exactly an Alabama pace.
The lack of interior scoring will be worth watching here.
Monmouth shoots 46% on 2s, and Hofstra shoots 48%. Plus, both are terrific at defending inside the arc.
That'll lead to a load of 3s, and if the shots don't fall, this is begging to be an under.
My Pick: Under 134.5
