Oklahoma vs Marquette College Basketball Betting Preview

Oklahoma Basketball

The Sooners are a mixed bag. They've lost twice this season, but that was to Gonzaga and Nebraska, the fifth- and 40th-ranked teams in KenPom. Their four wins have been against teams all ranked 292nd or lower, and none of those games were particularly close.

We really can’t know what the early-season metrics for Oklahoma mean. What we do is the Sooners struggle with their size, ranking 215th in the country in that category. We also know that they have a lot of experience, as they rank 21st nationally.

This Oklahoma team has also struggled to get to the free throw line, and it’s something that might hurt it against Marquette.

The Sooners do a good job of limiting turnovers and shooting, as they rank 38th in adjusted offensive efficiency.

Marquette Basketball

In today’s college basketball, Marquette has done unique things. The Golden Eagles are one of the few teams that hasn't relied on the transfer portal, which has allowed them to bring back a cohesive unit.

This is a program that has made the NCAA Tournament in each of Shaka Smart’s first four years. However, this is the worst start for Marquette in his tenure.

The Golden Eagles' losses do have answers. They struggled against the size and frontcourt of both Indiana and Maryland, and they shot just 38% against Dayton.

This is a team that plays at a very high tempo, ranking 20th in average possession length, at just 14.7 seconds per possession. The Golden Eagles' field goal percentage isn’t as good as you’d expect for a team that has a high shot volume inside the arc.

They don’t shoot a ton of 3s, and that’s for good reason (31.2% from downtown). Meanwhile, the Sooners do a terrible job at guarding the 3, so something will have to give there.

Oklahoma vs. Marquette Betting Analysis

This is a real test for Oklahoma, and even though Marquette has three losses, it's been tested much more in the early season.

And that will be a major reason as to why I'm picking Marquette to win the game.

The Golden Eagles have struggled with size and some of the frontcourts they’ve have faced, but Oklahoma won't be able to take advantage of those problems.

I’ll be on the Marquette side to win this game straight up, as it'll use its speed and up-tempo offense to roll past Oklahoma.

My Pick: Marquette ML +124 (Play to -140)
