Ole Miss vs Iowa College Basketball Betting Preview
Ole Miss Basketball
Ole Miss is off to a 5-0 start. The Rebels have played only home games and only one matchup was against a decent opponent — a Memphis team the Rebs handled 83-77.
Last season, the Rebels were elite at taking care of the ball (third nationally), and that trend has continued to start 2025-26 (24th).
French point guard Ilias Kamardine has been one of the best international newcomers in the country to start the season. He’s averaging 15.8 points and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 46% from behind the arc.
The Rebs have a big three in terms of offensive production, with Kamardine, Malik Dia and AJ Storr.
Dia is the one key returnee from last season's Sweet 16 team, while Storr seems to have found himself again after a nightmare season with Kansas in 2024-25. Both are averaging 14.4 points per game.
Iowa Basketball
Similarly, Iowa is off to a 5-0 start to begin the Ben McCollum era, and it's soared up on KenPom from its preseason ranking of 48th to 29th.
McCollum has brought his slow half-court pace from Drake over to Iowa City, as the Hawkeyes are 358th in tempo to start the campaign. They’ve only played one top-200 opponent, an alright Xavier team whom they beat 81-62 at home.
Point guard Bennett Stirtz is leading a very potent offensive attack. The Hawkeyes lead the nation in 2-point field goal percentage by shooting a ridiculous 70% clip, and they also own the nation’s ninth-best assist rate (69%). McCollum’s offensive system is already beautiful to watch.
On the defensive side of the ball, the highest scoring output the Hawkeyes have allowed so far is 70 points (vs Southeast Missouri). Of course, that can be correlated to their slow pace, though.
Just like last season at Drake, McCollum’s guys have been forcing a ton of turnovers. They’re 19th defensively in turnover rate, but will they be able to turnover an Ole Miss team that thrives at taking care of the rock?
Ole Miss vs. Iowa Betting Analysis
I’m definitely expecting a close one here between two top-30-ish teams with high level coaches.
With a home game against Xavier being its biggest test so far, we don’t really know how good Iowa is yet.
However, Stirtz has been great orchestrating things offensively and the efficiency with which the Hawkeyes have picked teams apart has been excellent so far. That has me more confident in the Hawkeyes as the better unit right now.
Iowa should score the ball more effectively in the half-court, so this one should come down to the turnover battle.
While I definitely lean towards Iowa to win and cover the small number, I have an angle that I prefer. We have two teams in the bottom 50 nationally in tempo. Ole Miss takes a lot of tough shots, and outside of its big three there hasn't been much going on offensively.
And while Iowa is absolutely dialed offensively right now running McCollum's system and playing off Stirtz, this is by far the best defense it's faced so far.
There will be much more resistance at the rim and more physicality than what the Hawkeyes have seen so far. So, I'm going with the under.
My Pick: Under 147 (Play to 145.5)
