Pitt vs UCF College Basketball Betting Preview

Pitt Basketball

This matchup is a major clash of styles, as Pitt ranks 305th in adjusted tempo while UCF sits at 34th. It's safe to say that the key for Pitt to win is controlling the pace and slowing down the Knights.

They should be able to do so by continuing their stellar play on the defensive end. Through five games this season, the Panthers rank 64th in adjusted defensive efficiency and 18th in effective field goal percentage allowed.

The strength of their defense has been on the interior, where they're 16th in 2-point percentage allowed. That's also where the Knights have generated over 65% of their offense from.

However, on the other end of the floor, the Panthers' offense remains untested.

On paper, they're average-to-slightly-below-average in all three areas of the floor, but they have an opportunity to prove themselves against a UCF team that's 173rd in effective field goal percentage allowed and 108th in adjusted defensive efficiency.

From UCF's perspective, it's going to need to push the pace and stretch the floor as much as possible against Pitt.

We've seen the Knights have success in track meets this season, but there's no doubt that their style of play can work against them, like it did in a 105-93 loss to Vanderbilt.

We should see it work against them again in this matchup, as they're due for sizable regression from beyond the arc.

The Knights have shot the lights out from downtown, leading the nation with a 47.7% 3-point field goal percentage. They've had such great shooting efficiency on a low volume, as they're just 262nd in 3-point shooting rate.

That means their hot streak from long range is simply unsustainable.

If the Knights go cold from downtown and are unable to push the pace, we could see them on the wrong end of an extended run.

Pitt vs. UCF Betting Analysis

While this game is on a neutral floor, the Knights may have a small home-court advantage since this game is in Florida.

However, it won't amount to much since the Panthers are the better team.

Pitt is the perfect contrast to UCF and will be the Knights' kryptonite in this matchup.

Look for the Panthers to control the tempo and defend the perimeter on their way to a victory in the opening round of the Skyscanner Legends Classic.

My Pick: Pitt ML -115
