Prairie View A&M vs Florida College Basketball Betting Preview
Prairie View A&M Basketball
Prairie View A&M has been incredibly hot down the stretch, as the Panthers won five of six to conclude the regular season, followed by winning four games in five days to capture the SWAC title.
In their First-Four game in Dayton, Ohio, a strong second half — fueled by its defense — led the way for Prairie View to advance. The Panthers are a confident group right now and are playing with some swagger, but they appear overmatched here against the mighty Gators.
The offense is carried by Dontae Horne, who averages 20.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Behind Horne, Tai’Reon Joseph scores 17.8 points per game, while Cory Wells chips in 13.
The Panthers play fast and consistently seek opportunities at the rim or in the mid-range, which is why they average 78.6 points per game on the season. Regardless of that stat, this isn't a strong shooting team, and the Panthers rely on fast break opportunities created by their defense or trips to the foul line, which they procure regularly.
The defense plays a high-energy system, and Prairie View will trap and seek to force turnovers, which it's had success with down the stretch.
The chaotic nature of their games allows for wild swings, and recently those swings have been in their favor. Four players have at least 30 steals, and the men in the middle are great at protecting the rim and sending shot attempts away.
While this unit has had recent success, the brutal non-conference schedule did see Prairie View get shredded against top-tier competition.
Florida Basketball
Florida has been one of the hottest teams in the country following a 9-5 start to the season that saw the defending champs lose three out of four games early on.
The Gators have won 17 of their last 19, and the offense has really been the catalyst for the turnaround. Florida scored 80 or more points in nine of its 10 conference games down the stretch and is really peaking at the right time. This is a dangerous team capable of making a run at the Final Four.
The offense has five players who average double-figure scoring, led by Thomas Haugh at 17.1 points per game. Alex Condon is a strong presence in the post and averages 15 and eight boards. Rueben Chinyelu averages a double-double with 11.2 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
This is arguably the best offensive rebounding team in the country, and while not a great 3-point shooting team overall, the second-chance opportunities and trips to the stripe overcompensate for that.
Defensively, this bunch is solid. The length alone makes it difficult to move the ball into the painted area, where Florida has the eighth-best 2-point defense in America, allowing just 42% from the field.
This is a strong rim-protecting defense that's seen four players reject 30 or more shot attempts this season. While Florida doesn’t force a ton of turnovers, it doesn't get caught out of position. The transition defense is excellent and getting to the rim on these guys is tough.
Prairie View A&M vs Florida Pick, Betting Analysis
This line opened with Florida listed as a massive 35.5-point favorite with a total set at 155. I'm going to look at the first-half line for Florida, which is -20.5.
Florida was outstanding in the non-conference in the first half this season, holding five opponents under 27 points in the opening stanza. The defense should have an overwhelming advantage here against Prairie View, and I would suspect this game will get out of hand rather early.
Prairie View is going to struggle with the length of Florida, and it'll be almost impossible to accrue decent post looks. The Panthers shoot 3s at a rate that is 350th nationally, and they're only making a third of them. Stylistically, the Panthers are going to try to get to the rim and get fouled, but I can't see them having success here.
IF Prairie tries to press and trap the Gators, I'm confident in Xaivian Lee and Boogie Fland and their ball-handling ability to beat the pressure.
We should see plenty of fast break opportunities for the Gators, who will finish at the rim frequently.
Florida has one of the most efficient offenses in the country and even on missed shots, should completely overwhelm the Panthers along the offensive glass. Prairie View is allowing an insane amount of offensive boards, and Florida is the best offensive rebounding team in the country.
The Panthers foul excessively, and Florida should have plenty of foul shots here in the first half. I expect this lead to be built up in excess of the first half spread.
Florida has, at times, taken its foot off the accelerator. The defensive effort has dropped a notch in games where it's had a sizable lead, so I don’t want to lay the insane 35.5-number on the full-game spread.
However, with its size advantage and the schematic matchup advantages for Florida, I'll lay the first-half number.
My Pick: Florida 1H -20.5
