Providence Basketball

It’s the dawn of a new era in Friartown as former South Florida head coach Bryan Hodgson was hired as Providence head coach this past March after a disastrous three-year tenure under Kim English that led to zero NCAA Tournament appearances.

As a Providence alum myself, I am elated about the future direction of the Friar program, which could not have gotten off to a better start under Hodgson.

In his first recruiting class in Friartown for the incoming 2027 freshman class, Hodgson put his influence on full display by securing the sixth-ranked player in the country in five-star center Lewis Uvwo.

While this is a moot point in relation to Saturday night’s matchup, it speaks to how much of an impact the former USF Bulls head coach has had on the sport in such a short period of time.

Hodgson got right to work in the transfer portal after losing several key players that English had previously recruited, successfully landing several top names in a loaded portal class.

The Friars secured former San Diego State defensive specialist Miles Byrd, who will make an immediate impact at both ends of the floor.

The Aztec transfer boasts an elite three-point stroke and is one of the best on-ball defenders in college basketball, having been touted as a sleeper to win the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Hodgson also acquired several more talented players via the portal, including the likes of former Maryland forward Elijah Saunders, UNLV’s Jacob Bannarbie, and Georgetown product Malik Mack, among a few others.

Despite losing their premier scorer from last season, Stefan Vaaks, to Illinois, the Friars were able to retain junior guard Ryan Mela, whilst also landing four-star forward Javon Bardwell — the 36th-ranked player in the 2026 freshman class.

Providence got off to a phenomenal start in Hodgson’s first game at the helm, dismantling the Maine Black Bears in a 27-point victory where the Friars really showed off the depth in their rotation, with five players scoring in double figures.

In just seven minutes on the floor, Saunders scored eight points, including two triples.

This squad boasts incredible depth and athleticism and will really be put to the test on Saturday night versus Fred Hoiberg’s Cornhuskers following their Sweet 16 appearance in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Nebraska Basketball

After winning its first NCAA Tournament game in program history, Nebraska got off to a scorching start to its 2026-27 campaign, laying an absolute beatdown on Le Moyne by a whopping 42-point margin on Monday night.

Hoiberg returned several key contributors from last year’s Sweet 16 team, including All-Big Ten selection Pryce Sandfort, Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year Braden Frager, and senior guard Cale Jacobsen, among a few others.

While the Cornhuskers lost Rienk Mast and a few other pieces from last year’s team, Hoiberg had a stellar offseason in the transfer portal, notably securing Belmont product and 6-foot-10 senior forward Sam Orme to bolster his frontcourt.

Nebraska also landed former Boston College center Boden Kapke, whose 7-foot stature should play a vital role in the Cornhuskers’ interior presence and rim protection.

Hoiberg also acquired former Utah Valley guard Trevan Leonhardt, who is remarkably versatile and should play a key role for the Cornhuskers at both ends of the floor.

While Nebraska boasts a rather successful portal class, the Cornhuskers failed to recruit a single freshman ranked inside the top 100 in the 2026 class, which could definitely prove fatal when navigating what should be a difficult Big Ten conference schedule.

Though there were definitely concerns about the team's offensive production heading into the season, Nebraska’s 106-point performance versus Le Moyne is quite promising ahead of what should be a very competitive game versus a deep Friar squad.

Providence vs. Nebraska Pick, Betting Analysis

We are in for a phenomenal matchup on Saturday night as Providence and Nebraska get ready to square off in a ‘Hall of Fame Tip-Off’ showdown at Mohegan Sun.

Though Saturday’s matchup will evidently be played at a neutral site, the ‘Friar Fanatics’ typically travel very well, and I expect Providence to have a slight crowd advantage, which could definitely be a difference-maker in a closely contested matchup.

The Cornhuskers undoubtedly looked impressive on Monday night, but I am extremely high on this Providence team after a significant influx of talent via the transfer portal in Hodgson’s first year at the helm.

I definitely think Nebraska’s 2.5-point line is somewhat fair considering how well Hoiberg’s bunch performed in last year’s NCAA Tournament. I just think the Friars are catching too many points in a game I would price closer to a “pick’em”.

I feel confident backing Providence +2.5 in what should be an extremely entertaining game for all 40 minutes.

Pick: Providence +2.5
