Richmond vs Furman College Basketball Betting Preview
Richmond Basketball
Richmond heads into the ESPN Events Invitational as an undefeated squad. The best team the Spiders have faced is William & Mary, which is ranked 132nd by KenPom. No other opponent has ranked higher than 261st, so it's safe to say Richmond has been largely untested.
Outside of Tribe, no other team has been within margin, as the Spiders have won every other game by at least 15 points.
This matchup against Furman will be a tougher test, as the Paladins rank 167th in KenPom.
Richmond relies heavily on its offensive firepower and its ability to move the ball and find the best, most efficient shot. The Spiders are averaging 17.8 assists per game, but against inferior competition, it’s hard to know how they’ll handle more pressure.
They also run a 3/4 press, focusing on ball pressure up the floor. In half-court sets, they’ll continually pressure the ball handler and create chaos in the passing lanes, which has allowed them to average 9.2 steals per game.
They've struggled with deep shooting against zones and with free throws (75.7%). Expect the Paladins to opt for zone looks, but if the 3-ball does fall, the Paladins could be in trouble.
Furman Basketball
Furman enters this event with three losses, but its strength of schedule has been far better than Richmond's. The 'Dins have played three teams ranked 127th or better by KenPom.
They've struggled from deep in the early going, knocking down just 28.3% from 3. But the level of competition they've faced might have skewed their offensive stats.
Unlike an untested Richmond team, Furman has tested its abilities — and a regression closer to the mean might be very plausible for both teams.
Furman will continue to slow the pace to counteract its lack of physicality down low. The 'Dins are efficient and like to use most of the shot clock.
Slowing the pace down will frustrate the Spiders, and that could generate more opportunities for Furman.
Richmond vs. Furman Betting Analysis
This handicap really comes down to who we think is more ready for this game. This is an early start time (11 a.m.) on the East Coast on Thanksgiving.
But based on the numbers, the play must be Richmond.
I really do believe these metrics are somewhat skewed, as I mentioned above. Furman has played the far tougher schedule, and I do think that'll help its cause once it gets into the SoCon play.
The Paladins' ability to take good shots and slow the pace down will be two things they can use to have some success. While it would be difficult to take them on the moneyline, I do think there’s plenty there to take them to cover.
And if this game is close late, and sitting at around five, six or seven points, I like Richmond to miss big free throws late to keep this number alive for us. Take the points.
My Pick: Furman +4.5
