St. John's Red Storm
After what was surely an up-and-down first couple months of the season, the Red Storm are catching fire at the perfect time and are finally living up to their monumental preseason hype.
Everything started in the offseason, as the Johnnies acquired a couple of big name players in the transfer portal.
In his first big offseason move, Rick Pitino landed Ian Jackson. Jackson’s debut season with St. John's didn't start as well as planned, especially on the offensive end. Even with the calendar flipping to March, Jackson is still only averaging 10.2 points in less than 20 minutes per night.
However, while largely inefficient offensively, Jackson’s length and size have turned him into a fantastic high-pressure defender for Pitino.
Meanwhile, Bryce Hopkins has also proved to be a great portal acquisition for the Red Storm. The former Providence Friar is posting an impressive 13 points and six rebounds per game.
St. John's is scoring over 82 points per game, and it ranks outside the top 50 in the country in offensive efficiency, per KenPom.
Fortunately, the Johnnies’ frontcourt has been elite on both ends of the floor, mostly thanks to the two-way contributions of its senior leader Zuby Ejiofor. He leads St. John's in scoring with nearly 16 points per contest, while converting on over 53% of his field goal attempts.
Thanks to the additions of Hopkins and Dillon Mitchell to Pitino’s frontcourt, the Johnnies boast an elite interior defense. According to Haslametrics, St. John's ranks 14th nationally in defensive efficiency rating.
The second-ranked team in the Big East is allowing opponents to score fewer than 71 points per game this season, maintaining a stellar double-figure scoring margin.
Seton Hall Pirates
Seton Hall enters Friday night’s Big East clash with a surprising 19-9 overall record in Shaheen Holloway’s fourth season at the helm.
Holloway was a massive hire for Seton Hall prior to the 2022 season after leading his Saint Peter's Peacocks squad to the Elite Eight in one of the most improbable Cinderella runs in the history of the NCAA Tournament.
Holloway led the Pirates to the Sweet 16 in 2000 as a player and is the career assist-leader in Seton Hall program history, making this a match made in heaven.
After missing the NCAA Tournament in each of his first three years as the Pirates’ head coach, the Pirates are currently on the tournament bubble.
Holloway’s offense has been largely mediocre this season, ranking outside the top 300 in points per game (70) and outside the top 165 in offensive efficiency rating.
Adam "Budd" Clark leads the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game. Alongside Clark, AJ Staton-McCray is posting 12 points per game in his sixth collegiate season.
On the other end, Tajuan Simpkins has made a big impact on defense. The Elon transfer is Holloway’s premier on-ball defender, often picking up opposing guards in the full-court.
Simpkins and Staton-McCray lead an elite defensive unit that ranks inside the top 15 in the country in defensive efficiency rating, per KenPom.
The defense also ranks fifth nationally in opponent turnover rate and leads the entire nation in block percentage.
St. John's vs. Seton Hall Betting Analysis
Holloway’s bunch has a big opportunity to add a top-15 victory to its tournament resume.
This Big East clash features two teams with very contrasting styles. While the Johnnies' offense is rather up-tempo, constantly pushing the pace, Seton Hall prefers playing at a snail’s pace and runs its offense through the half-court.
If the Pirates are to have any success in March, it'll need to improve substantially on the offensive end of the floor.
I think this is a good spot to back the Johnnies to keep on rolling. While Seton Hall's defense has been very impressive, I don't see how it's going to match the offensive firepower of St. John's.
I'll be looking to back the Johnnies in some moneyline parlays, as I don’t feel great laying a big number on St. John's in a rivalry game on the road.
My Pick: St. John's ML -210 (ML Parlay Target)
