TCU vs Colorado College Basketball Betting Preview
TCU Basketball
Sitting at 13-8 overall and 3-5 in Big 12 play, TCU has the makeup of a potential bubble team. However, ever since an opening-night loss at home to New Orleans, the Horned Frogs have played some really good basketball.
TCU secured non-conference wins over Florida and Wisconsin, and only fell by four to Michigan. The Horned Frogs choked away a late lead in an overtime road loss at Kansas, the beginning of a four-game skid. The schedule doesn't get much tougher than playing at Kansas, hosting Arizona and traveling to BYU.
Jamie Dixon’s group sits 50th on KenPom, with a 23rd-ranked defensive efficiency rating and 98th on the offensive end.
The backcourt of Jayden Pierre and Brock Harding has been rock solid, with Pierre shooting a career-high 41.1% from 3 and Harding ranking fourth in the Big 12 in assists per game.
Versatile forwards Xavier Edmonds and David Punch are the two leading scorers on this team and are strong athletes who finish well around the rim. The duo has been excellent of late, with each averaging 20 points per game over their last three contests.
Defensively, those two anchor the interior effectively, as TCU ranks 21st nationally in block rate.
The Horned Frogs also love to force turnovers to fuel their transition attack, ranking 37th nationally in turnover rate forced.
Colorado Basketball
I was buying Colorado as a fringe bubble team early this season, but Big 12 play has been brutal. After a 2-0 conference start, the Buffaloes have dropped six straight games, most recently a 30-point blowout loss to Iowa State.
It's worth noting that Tad Boyle’s group has only dropped two spots on KenPom during this six-game slide. The Buffs lost by just two and six points, respectively, at home to Texas Tech and Kansas.
The biggest issue for Colorado has been a steep drop-off in defensive efficiency. Boyle has fielded a top-56 defense for seven straight seasons, but this team currently sits 154th nationally. The Buffs struggle guarding ball screens and are allowing opponents to shoot a ludicrous 37.6% from 3-point range.
Offensively, this team is much better, with a couple of really good playmaking and shooting guards in Isaiah Johnson and Barrington Hargress. Both players rank inside the top 100 nationally in offensive rating and are shooting better than 42% from deep.
The frontcourt of Sebastian Rancik, Bangot Dak and Elijah Malone is absolutely massive, with all three players standing 6-foot-10 or taller. This size allows the Buffaloes to dominate the paint in certain matchups, although at times, the offense can look clunky.
One thing Colorado does very well is take care of the ball, ranking 21st nationally in offensive turnover percentage.
TCU vs. Colorado Betting Analysis
The spot sets up well for Colorado — a team desperate for a win — hosting a middle-of-the-pack Big 12 opponent.
It's also worth noting that TCU’s final two losses last season — albeit with a much different roster — both came against the Buffaloes.
TCU’s guards are excellent at getting into the lane, and I expect them to have success against this Colorado defense.
However, defensively, TCU relies on creating havoc and protecting the rim. Against a Colorado team that takes great care of the ball and often has three towering bigs on the floor, that becomes more difficult.
I'm torn on this one, so I'll side with the over, as I expect both teams to score efficiently.
My Pick: Over 153.5 (Play to 155)
