UCF vs UCLA College Basketball Betting Preview

UCF Basketball

Johnny Dawkins and the Knights earned an at-large bid with a 21-11 overall record (9-9 in Big 12).

With 0% of minutes carried over from last season and an overlooked crop of transfers, UCF is one of the most surprising high-major teams of this season.

The Knights stumbled to a 3-4 finish, although one loss was to Arizona, one was in overtime and one was by just one point.

The Knights play an up-tempo, aggressive style under Dawkins. The Knights love to get out in transition and play fast. UCF has depth and athleticism, thriving when it forces turnovers and lives in transition. This is also a really good 3-point shooting team (36.2%), although it doesn't shoot a ton of them.

Themus Fulks is a dynamite small guard who's a downhill attacker and playmaker. Riley Kugel plays off him as a shotmaking guard and secondary creator. Big wing Jordan Burks adds some legit shooting pop, as well.

It’s a physical and athletic group, but unlike most Dawkins-led teams, this group isn’t great defensively. The Knights are outside the top 100 in defensive efficiency on KenPom due to a mix of mental mistakes and being foul happy.

UCLA Basketball

UCLA didn’t live up to lofty preseason expectations in the regular season, but this a dangerous team playing its best basketball late in the campaign. Mick Cronin guided the Bruins to a solid 23-11 record, finishing 13-7 in the Big Ten.

The Bruins have been an elite offensive team since Skyy Clark returned from injury in mid-February. Clark and Trent Perry’s shooting ability and complimentary playmaking, and the brilliant point guard play of Donovan Dent forms one of the best guard trios in the country.

Tyler Bilodeau is a super skilled big man who makes this UCLA team really tough to guard due to five-out spacing.

Bilodeau and Dent both went down in the Big Ten Tournament with injuries, but both players will be active here and should be close to 100%

The Bruins are elite at taking care of the ball and at knocking down perimeter shots (top-16 in the country in both stats). This is an offensive-minded team that plays a methodical half-court style, and defensively, there have been some real strides lately.

UCLA can struggle on the interior with keeping teams off the offensive glass and protecting the rim. Bilodeau isn’t great defensively at the five spot, but backup bigs Xavier Booker and Stephen Jamerson don’t make much of a positive difference.

The Bruins are capable of playing tough and connected defense despite their limitations. This allows their offense to win games.

UCF vs UCLA Pick, Betting Analysis

UCF was awesome at generating second-chance opportunities and controlling the glass in non-conference play, but in the Big 12, it finished just 10th in offensive rebounding rate.

With defensive rebounding being a weakness for UCLA, I could see Jamichael Stillwell, John Bol and UCF’s bigs finding success outmuscling this UCLA frontcourt.

However, that potential matchup advantage isn’t enough to get me to side with the underdog.

UCLA’s guards are playing at such a high level, and I’m confident in their ability to get what they want. I also just think this is a hot team, as they looked great in Chicago at the Big Ten Tournament, even after their arguably two best players went down with injuries.

Cronin is more seasoned in the NCAA Tournament, as well.

I’ll take the team playing better ball right now to keep things rolling.

My Pick: UCLA -5.5 (Play to -7)
