More About UCLA
Stuckey: You know these Bruins. Johnny Juzang, Tyger Campbell, Jaime Jacquez and Co. went from the play-in game to Final Four last year, where they took Gonzaga to the brink. Well, the whole band is back together and ready to make a deep run.
Ranking in the top 15 in both offensive and defensive efficiency per KenPom, they fit the profile of a legit national title contender. They don’t play particularly fast under Mick Cronin, as you might expect. And they simply do not beat themselves, ranking fifth in the country in turnover percentage.
This is the anti-analytics team as they live in the mid-range, ranking outside the top 300 in rim-and-three rate, but they live there efficiently.
UCLA has dealt with a number of bumps and bruises late in the year, so keep an eye on the Bruins’ health. But at full strength, this team could get back to the Final Four in New Orleans.
More About Saint Mary’s
Stuckey: Do not sleep on this St. Mary’s team, led by one of the best coaches in the country, Randy Bennett.
This team runs incredible offense and slows the game down to a complete halt, ranking 338th in Adjusted Tempo. They are extremely uncomfortable to play in a tourney setting. Oh, and let’s not forget about the amazingly well-connected defense that actually ranks in the top-10 nationally, per Kenpom. They force tough shots and clean up the defensive glass (fifth nationally).
This is a legit top-20 team capable of making a deep run. There’s an abundance of experience and size in addition to a senior-laden backcourt. Tommy Kuhse’s re-emergence (and shooting) makes this team even more dangerous and they simply won’t beat themselves with turnovers, fouls or missed free throws.
We saw the ceiling with a victory over Gonzaga, so don’t be shocked to see the Gaels in a tight one down the stretch in the second weekend.
