UConn vs DePaul College Basketball Betting Preview

UConn Basketball

UConn has looked much better than last season, as it only has one loss (Arizona) as we head into Christmas week.

As expected from Dan Hurley in his eighth season at the helm in Storrs, his team's identity focuses on defense. The Huskies rank sixth in adjusted defensive efficiency, holding teams to an effective field goal percentage of just 41.9%.

They're also exceptional offensively, scoring at least 71 in all but two games. That efficiency is something to behold, considering UConn ranks 304th in average possession length.

The Huskies' biggest weakness has been their inability to get to the free-throw line. And when they do get there, they hit under 70%.

UConn does a great job of creating second-chance opportunities, though, which is an area the Blue Demons struggle in.

DePaul Basketball

DePaul finds itself sitting at 8-4, and from two seasons ago, that's a drastic improvement. Chris Holtmann, the ex-Ohio State coach, has implemented his structured scheme to make the Blue Demons competitive in every game but one, a 33-point loss to LSU.

However, overall, the Blue Demons' strength of schedule has lacked quality (349th nationally). Six of their eight wins have come against teams ranked outside the 300 in KenPom.

Their loss to St. John’s was impressive — by just 13 on the road — but they'll surely be out-rebounded by one of the longest teams in college hoops.

The only way they can compete in this game will be to lean into their ball movement. They rank eighth in assists per field goals made, and against a very sound UConn defensive unit, that'll need to be a major focus.

UConn vs. DePaul Betting Analysis

It’s a double-digit spread, and this will be a bet you'll have to hold your nose to place, but I'm on DePaul here. The Blue Demons have been a lot more competitive this season, and after a strong effort last game, I like that to continue here.

Expect them to push the tempo of the Huskies, who play at a snails pace. That might give them enough shot volume to make this game competitive. CJ Gunn, NJ Benson and Layden Blocker average double digits in points, and that's the balance I like for them to cover this spread.

I like them at 14.5, and we might get some public action to push this game even higher.

I won’t be keen at giving much rope to a smaller spread.

My Pick: DePaul +14.5 (Play to +13)
