Xavier vs Iowa College Basketball Betting Preview

Xavier Basketball

The chasm of optimism between Xavier and Iowa fans this year can be seen from space.

Xavier looks to have its worst team in at least 30 years, struggling with Marist and Le Moyne before dropping a home game to Santa Clara on Monday. The Muskies currently rank outside the top 100 in KenPom, a place they have never finished in the program's history.

New head coach Richard Pitino just didn’t do well building a roster in his first year. His portal additions were primarily mid-major pieces (and not well-rounded ones), and his team is heavily reliant on one of the worst starting point guards in the power ranks, former Boise State transfer Roddie Anderson III.

Finishing inside the paint has been a chore, as Xavier ranks 348th in 2-point field goal percentage.

Iowa Basketball

Iowa has been a smashing machine through two games, handling Robert Morris and Western Illinois at home. The Hawkeyes are a better version of last year’s Drake squad, with the genius head coach Ben McCollum and his All-American-caliber point guard Bennett Stirtz leading the way.

In order to beat Iowa, you must execute at a high level, and that’s simply not something Xavier is capable of doing at this time. The Muskies rank 356th in field goal percentage allowed at the rim, while Iowa ranks top-35 in both rim field goal attempt rate and rim field goal percentage.

The Hawkeyes will drive and back cut Xavier to death on Friday and hit a bunch of triples if the Muskies overcompensate.

On the other end, Xavier will have real issues handling the rock and maintaining possession with Iowa’s perimeter size and ability to turn its opponents over. The Hawkeyes will dig down in the post, jump in passing lanes and snuff out anything inside the arc.

The Musketeers will pray for rain from deep.

Xavier vs. Iowa Betting Analysis

This line will get steamed heavily towards Iowa, and for good reason.

Xavier’s hope is that this game stays low possession with McCollum’s willingness to play in the half-court, but even that might not be enough to keep it within 20.

My Pick: Iowa -14.5
