Virginia Tech is in the middle of a nightmare season, already parting ways with their head coach and falling far short of preseason expectations. Still, I believe in this team and can’t ignore how good of a spot this is for them. On the other side, I’ve been wildly unimpressed with California’s recent play. They were a fumble on the 1 yard line away from losing to a bad UNC team and now have to travel across the entire country to face a very capable opponent, despite what the records might suggest. Let’s not forget, this is the same Virginia Tech team many saw as a dark horse contender in the ACC before the year. They’re also coming into this one off a bye week, which only adds to the advantage. This is a nightmare spot for Cal. Lane Stadium remains one of the toughest environments in college football, no matter how the season’s gone. Virginia Tech fans always show up, and the atmosphere will be electric on a Friday night primetime game. As for Cal’s offense, it’s painfully average. The run game is non existent, and they lack any explosiveness. They rank 119th nationally in explosive play rate, one of the worst marks in the country. That’s crucial because this Virginia Tech defense’s biggest weakness has been giving up big plays, something Cal simply can’t exploit. Their offense relies on short, methodical drives that must be executed perfectly. This is tough against an aggressive, underrated Hokies front seven that ranks top 20 in pass rush. If Tech can get Cal behind the sticks, those drives will fall apart quickly. We saw this multiple times in their ugly showing against UNC. That game made my eyes bleed and likely should have been a Cal loss. Offensively, Virginia Tech should find plenty of success on the ground. Cal’s run defense has been bad, and they’re dealing with key injuries in the middle. I still believe in Kyron Drones and his ability to extend plays on the ground could be the difference maker here. Virginia Tech also has one of the best special teams units in the country. That’s an underrated edge that can swing games. We’ve seen teams like Oregon State dominate early only to lose because of poor special teams play. All in all, this is a brutal travel spot and matchup for Cal. I’m ready to fade them here. Even though the line has climbed, I’m comfortable backing Virginia Tech at anything under a touchdown. Take VT to cover.
