Boston College Eagles Betting Preview: Try to Limit Big Plays

In his first season back in New England, Bill O’Brien led Boston College to a 7-6 record and a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl. A preseason win total of 5.5 puts the Eagles right back on the cut line for bowl season expectations.

After a dominating season-opening victory against Fordham, Boston College fell in a shootout last week on the road at Michigan State. It all came down to a successful two-point conversation for the Spartans in double overtime to steal a 42-40 win.

I watched every single snap of that game and despite the loss, my biggest takeaway was that Dylan Lonergan is for real. The former four-star recruit transferred to Boston College from Alabama and has looked outstanding in his first two starts.

Lonergan went 34-of-45 for 390 yards passing with four touchdowns against Michigan State. He now has eight touchdowns and no interceptions and sits eighth in the nation with 329.0 yards per game. He's completing more than 75% of his passes.

Last year’s top receiver Lewis Bond is already Lonergan’s favorite target, pulling in 22 passes for 228 yards in two games, the most receptions in the country. Tight end Jeremiah Franklin is also a frequent target.

O’Brien is known for being a quarterback whisperer and the Eagles currently have the second-best passing offense.

On the other side of the ball, Boston College ranked 22nd in the nation against the run last season, allowing just 114.9 rushing yards per game. The Eagles appear to be strong up front once again, allowing just 82.5 yards per game on the ground this season.

The Eagles sit in the top 25 in tackles for loss, totaling 16 stops in the backfield through two games.

What hurt the Eagles last week against Michigan State was allowing too many big plays. The Spartans were outgained by 77 yards but hit 14 explosive plays against the Eagles' defense.

Boston College returns tackling machine KP Price at safety, but the rest of the secondary struggled to keep plays in front of them.

Stanford Cardinal Betting Preview: QB Switch is Much Needed

After once being looked at as one of the standards of college football, the Cardinal have become one of the biggest messes in the sport. Troy Taylor was fired for cause over the summer and new GM Andrew Luck brought in his old coach Frank Reich to serve as the interim for one season.

Most people expected talented recruit Elijah Brown to win the starting quarterback job, but it was veteran Ben Gulbranson who got the nod instead.

It's clear that he just can’t play. Gulbranson has completed 51.6% of his passes with no touchdowns and three interceptions. He averages 4.0 yards per attempt.

Stanford has no chance of covering this game if it doesn't make the switch to Brown.

The entire offense rests on the shoulders of running back Micah Ford. He's totaled 134 yards and has the only offensive touchdown for the Cardinals this season. He looked good against Hawaii but was unable to get anything going against BYU last week.

It's been a dreadful start for this offense under Reich. They rank 132nd in the country with just 223.5 total yards per game, and only three teams have been worse than Stanford’s 3.47 yards per play.

The defense has at least been a little better, ranking in the middle of the pack at 71st in total defense. They had perhaps the worst pass defense in the country last season and gave up a ton of points. The one positive was they did a good job forcing turnovers, which helped bail them out of some mistakes.

Luckily, they were able to return nearly 80% of their sacks, tackles and pressure from last season,

Tevarua Tafiti is their leading linebacker and excels at getting into the backfield and getting after the quarterback.

Boston College vs Stanford Pick, Betting Analysis

So far, things have looked OK for the Stanford defense, but its faced a Hawaii quarterback who got hurt in the game and a true freshman quarterback at BYU. Lonergan and this Boston College passing attack are a different beast.

Stanford ranked 130th in the country last season in passing yards allowed (280.6 per game). The Cardinal were 117th in Pro Football Focus’s Coverage Grade. Two games of average defensive numbers don't have me convinced this isn’t a below-average secondary.

Lonergan and this offense should be able to absolutely shred this Stanford secondary and move the ball up and down the field at will. Boston College has a terrific run defense that can shutdown Ford and force a nonexistent Stanford passing attack to have to throw the ball.

If Stanford elects to start Gulbranson again, this is going to be a bloodbath. Even if the Cardinal elect to start Brown, who has more upside, it'll be just his second career start. I’m not sure he can go toe-to-toe with Lonergan, who looks like he could be one of the top quarterbacks in the ACC.

We're likely getting a discount on the number here because the Eagles have to travel all the way across the country from Boston to California.

While that's certainly a daunting trip, O’Brien should have a big advantage from his 13 years working in the NFL. He's used to the preparation of traveling all over the country and should have his team ready to play.

I’ll take Boston College at anything under two touchdowns here.

Pick: Boston College -13.5
