East Carolina Pirates Betting Preview: New Faces Calling Plays
East Carolina isn't to be messed with.
Ever since Blake Harrell took over for the Pirates in 2024, this has been a program that has played some exceptional football. They've come away the past two seasons with back-to-back Military Bowl wins and finished last season with a 6-2 record in the American Conference.
One glaring change to this well-oiled machine is offensive coordinator John David Baker, who left for Ole Miss this offseason. However, ECU reloaded and brought in Jordan Davis, who led North Texas' offense in 2025.
That is significant.
The Mean Green were the highest-scoring program in the FBS last season, averaging 44.2 points per game. And in standard down metrics, they ranked first in PPA, third in Success Rate and 13th in explosiveness.
Now, the big difference will be at quarterback. Last year's starter, Katin Houser, left town and headed to Illinois, which means Mitch Griffis, the sixth-year QB, will be the field general.
Griffis started in one season at Wake Forest during the 2023 season and was nothing to write home about. He completed 60% of his passes with a porous 9:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
The Pirates also bring in a new defensive coordinator after Josh Aldridge left for the USF DC position. Former Memphis DC Jordon Hankins assumes the helm, while defensive line coach Roy Tesh joins as a co-DC.
Last season, Memphis' defense wasn't great and was clearly a major weakness for the Tigers. The Hankins-led squad fared pretty well against the run but continued to get beaten through the air.
Defense was a big strength for the Pirates last season, but having a guy who's familiar with the program like Tesh help out Hankins may end up being beneficial.
Alabama Crimson Tide Betting Preview: Sleeping Giant?
Has any program taken more grief this offseason than the Alabama Crimson Tide?
Last season's Rose Bowl was ugly, and it didn't make head coach Kalen DeBoer look great either. But as the college football season approached, reports out of camp were encouraging.
The offensive line looks like it's due for a resurgence.
Alabama loses center Parker Brailsford and left tackle Kadyn Proctor to the NFL, but in turn, rolls out freak-athlete Jackson Lloyd at left tackle and Cal Poly transfer Racin Delgatty at center.
The O-line needed a change, especially at the top, as Bama brought in coach Adrian Klemm, who has coached with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots to get into the trenches. And based on everything they've been saying, the Tide are going to pound the ground.
Last season, the run game suffered greatly due to poor O-line play. We should expect Daniel Hill to get the bulk of the carries this season, but don't be surprised if Kevin Riley and true freshman EJ Crowell get some burn as well.
What I will be curious to see is how Keelon Russell fares in his first season as the starting quarterback. Russell had won the starting job over Austin Mack this summer after serving as the third-stringer last season.
The hype has been real about the former five-star slinger, and in limited reps against ULM and Eastern Illinois last season, he seems like he'll be good to go.
Defensively, I'm not concerned in the slightest.
Defense was Bama's strength, and it returns three defensive backs in Zabien Brown, Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb. Not only that, but I expect a big breakout from former five-star cornerback Dijon Lee Jr.
Lastly, look out for EDGE Yhonzae Pierre, who cemented himself as one of the better pass rushers in the game. After posting 14.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks with three forced fumbles, I anticipate Pierre to be even more dominant.
East Carolina vs Alabama Pick, Betting Analysis
Part of what made Alabama the butt of all the jokes this past year was what it did in Week 1 of last season.
Losing to Florida State in Tallahassee was certainly a black eye, but the Tide managed to bounce back by reaching the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff.
East Carolina is an older team, and I don't think it's fair to say that the Pirates are going to get blown out. I have to imagine that they're going to put Alabama's O-line to the test early and put as much pressure on Russell as possible.
I'm also still wary of the Tide's run game. Even though Hill was a serviceable back, I still haven't seen enough from him to think he can carry a game on his back.
Our projections have Alabama favored by 22.8 points, and with the line being at 28.5, I think that's fair. The most important thing for Russell is to get reps, and I wonder if the plan to start the game is to slowly roll him out.
Coming into this game, there's some mystery because there's no real film on ECU's offense and defense with this personnel.
I still think Bama wins easily, as ECU is 0-9 against SEC competition, and the Pirates haven't beaten a ranked team since 2014. But I don't think this will be a total blowout.
