North Alabama Lions Betting Preview: Against a Next-Level Opponent
North Alabama is one of the teams that enters this week 1-0 as they pulled off a 22-10 Week 0 victory over Samford. It was the first time the Lions have won their season opener in seven years.
They got on the board with a 95-yard touchdown pass from Destin Wade to Xavier Johnson, the longest pass in school history. It was the first career touchdown for Johnson, and he finished with 129 yards in his first collegiate game.
Wade threw for 229 yards and the touchdown. The junior returns after getting some playing experience last season. He was effective as a runner, nearly amassing 500 yards on the ground. However, he will need to make some strides as a passer, as he completed just 51% of his passes last season.
Week 0 was a positive sign for him, but North Alabama is stepping up in competition this week. The Lions don't do this often, as it is their first game against an SEC opponent since they played Vanderbilt in 1959.
The Lions put together a dominant defensive performance last week as they recorded a FCS-era school record with 13 tackles for loss, holding Samford to -8 rushing yards in the process. Their run defense may be a strength all season as linebackers Tango McCauley and Fred Vili were preseason All-UAC selections. McCauley made his presence felt last week with four tackles and a sack.
However, a one-win FCS opponent pales in comparison to a matchup with a SEC team. The Razorbacks should be dangerous on offense, and the books were projecting them for about 52 points this week.
It could be a long day for the Lions.
Arkansas Razorbacks Betting Preview: Hoping To Start a New Era
Ryan Silverfield comes to Fayetteville with no losing seasons and a 50-24 record in six years as a head coach. Rebuilding this program will be quite the challenge, as Arkansas has just three winning seasons in the last nine years and is coming off a 2-10 season.
However, the Silverfield era will begin with the Hogs being heavily favored at home.
The good news is he will have the majority of his roster at his disposal with the exception of three players already ruled out for the season.
Running back Sutton Smith is good to go for this week after he nursed an injury in the early stages of fall camp. Smith followed Silverfield from Memphis after rushing for 669 yards and seven touchdowns on 6.6 yards per carry. He is listed atop the depth chart as one of the team's lead backs along with Braylen Russell.
They will line up next to redshirt sophomore quarterback KJ Jackson. A former four-star recruit, Jackson completed 61.1% of his passes and threw three touchdowns in limited duty last season.
Boise State transfer Chris Marshall is expected to be Jackson's top target after averaging 19 yards per catch last season. Junior CJ Brown is the Razorbacks' leading returning receiver, while Jamari Hawkins is another familiar face for Silverfield, and he will man the slot.
While inexperienced, the Razorbacks have the makings of an exciting offense this season. However, even during last year's struggles, offense was rarely the issue as a Taylen Green– and Mike Washington-led group produced a top-20 finish in SP+, but the defense lagged and ranked 99th in the country and last in the SEC.
Silverfield's Memphis teams were also offense-first, so he may not provide many answers for this ailing defense in Year 1.
Just three Arkansas defenders who played 200 snaps last season return, which may not be a bad thing given the unit's struggles. Silverfield brought in 20 transfers on that side of the ball, and he does have a major returning building block in defensive end Quincy Rhodes Jr. Rhodes recorded 17.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks last season. The senior was a second-team selection on the preseason All-SEC team, and he has already caught the attention of NFL scouts as well.
North Alabama vs Arkansas Pick, Betting Analysis
While at Memphis, Silverfield's teams regularly scored 40 and 50 points in nonconference play.
Now at Arkansas, I'm expecting him to make a statement in his debut in one of the few games his team will be favored in the early part of the season.
Arkansas has also scored 52, 70, and 56 points in its last three games against FCS opponents.
With the Razorbacks revamping their defense and it not being a particular strength to begin with, I don't expect a shutout.
North Alabama should contribute enough to get 63 points if the Hogs don't get there themselves.
