North Texas vs Indiana Preview
North Texas Mean Green
Seemingly out of nowhere, North Texas grabbed headlines in 2025 for its high level of play on offense, fielding a group who ranked in the top-six in Success Rate, Finishing Drives and Havoc Allowed.
While the Mean Green's electric offense did help lead them to the American championship, they fell just short of winning it, losing to Tulane 34-21.
Unfortunately for the Mean Green, they're poised to take a major step back after losing nearly everyone to the transfer portal, including their quarterback Drew Mestemaker and head coach Eric Morris, who departed for Oklahoma State.
With Mestemaker gone, Tayven Jackson, a journeyman who's fresh off a stint with UCF, is expected to get the start.
While Jackson was able to eclipse 2,000 yards at UCF, he was very inefficient with his passing, throwing nearly as many interceptions as touchdowns. That made it difficult for the Knights to get into a rhythm.
With North Texas integrating transfers at every skill position, it'll be tough for Jackson to connect with his wideouts at a high rate, creating uncertainty over the stability of the offense.
On the other side of the ball, the Mean Green’s underwhelming defense forced them to play in high-flying track meets, trotting out a unit that ranked well below league average in Defensive Pass Play Explosiveness and Defensive Rush Play EPA.
With transfers being deployed at all three levels, their lack of continuity raises serious red flags, potentially sliding even further down the board in the same previously mentioned defensive metrics.
Indiana Hoosiers
Like North Texas, Indiana also made its way to center stage, but it made it on a much grander scale, capping off its perfect year with a national title. Curt Cignetti’s brilliance turned the Hoosiers into a well-oiled machine on offense, finishing in the top-three in Success Rate.
With Fernando Mendoza taking his talents to the NFL, all eyes are on Josh Hoover, who's set to take the reins as the defending national champions' signal-caller.
Cignetti has already said Hoover enters the program far more polished than Mendoza was when he first transferred from California. That strengths the belief that there will be only a minimal drop-off in production on offense with a new face under center.
Even if the Hoosiers do struggle to replicate last year’s success on offense, their defense may shockingly be even more dominant, bringing back a majority of their cast who led them to top-ranked marks in Finishing Drives and in Havoc.
They also bring in quality starters through the transfer portal, giving them much-needed depth at key positions to help rattle off another deep run in the playoffs.
In an era where transfers are as common as the cold, Indiana’s returning production on defense is something to admire. That's potentially the edge they need to win their second straight title.
Expect Cignetti to have his group firing on all cylinders in Week 1, flexing its talent at every level of the field while holding North Texas off the scoreboard.

North Texas vs Indiana Pick, Betting Analysis
Indiana’s dominance on defense can't be overstated, as it neutralizes opponents with relentless pressure and suffocating coverage.
While the Hoosiers did give up the occasional big play, per their bottom-20 mark in Explosiveness, they mitigated it by keeping their opponents out of the end zone, mending the majority of the damage.
In a favorable matchup against North Texas, the Hoosiers will be able to consistently flush Jackson out of the pocket by collapsing the middle, lowering the quality of his throws when on the run.
Jackson’s inability to take care of the ball will also be on full display, as the Hoosiers weave the ball through a second level that excels at creating Havoc.
Any early out increases the probability that North Texas stays under its team total, as it fails to field a defense that can get the ball back in its hands quickly. This takes precious time off the clock while also chipping away at the Mean Green's total number of possessions on offense.
While I normally preach how crucial it is to take a key football number, the Mean Green’s inability to get into scoring position will lead to long field goals rather than actual scoring opportunities, making the under 6.5 on their team total worth a wager.
Should a book open North Texas at 7/7.5 later in the week, increase your exposure by placing another bet at the key number.
Pick: North Texas Team Total Under 6.5
