Mack arrived and changed everything in a single offseason. He installed a veer and shoot offense under first-year coordinator Mitch Militello and a multiple 4-2-5 defense under Marc Mattioli, and the entire staff was new. Quarterback Amari Odom was named Conference USA MVP after the title game.

Mack's record made the hire less surprising than the result. He won three MEAC championships at North Carolina Central and won seven games in the one season he did not take a conference title. He worked as a running backs coach and offensive assistant before taking his first Group of Five job.

The program's trajectory has been steep. Kennesaw State played FCS football as recently as 2023, spent 2022 in the ASUN, and moved to Conference USA in 2024. Winning the league in year two of FBS eligibility puts the Owls alongside Jacksonville State, which did the same thing in 2024, as the only recent transitional programs to manage it.

Conference USA in 2026

The league lost two members this cycle, with Louisiana Tech leaving for the Sun Belt and UTEP for the Mountain West.

Kennesaw State's non-conference slate is front-loaded and local. FCS West Georgia visits on Thursday, Sept. 3, Georgia State comes to Fifth Third Stadium on Sept. 12, and the Owls travel to No. 20 Tennessee on Sept. 19 and Arkansas State on Sept. 26. Two Sun Belt opponents and an SEC road trip in the opening month is a demanding start.

Then October arrives, and it is unlike anything else in the country. Kennesaw State plays four straight games outside the Saturday window, all on CBS Sports Network: Jacksonville State at home on Wednesday, Oct. 7 in a championship rematch, at Missouri State on Wednesday, Oct. 14, Liberty at home on Thursday, Oct. 22, and at Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

November returns to normal with Delaware, Sam Houston, FIU and Western Kentucky.

The market has to price a team that improved by eight wins and returns the coach who did it.

The case for the Owls is that the turnaround was structural rather than lucky. A 7-1 conference record is not a close-game fluke, and Mack's history at North Carolina Central suggests he builds winners quickly and sustains them. He returns his coordinators, which is unusual for a coach whose staff just won a title.

The case against is the pattern that Conference USA has established. The last two champions were both second-year FBS programs, and neither Jacksonville State in 2024 nor Kennesaw State in 2025 repeated. Transitional programs often peak in the window where their FCS-built rosters are experienced and their opponents have not yet adjusted. Delaware occupies that position in 2026, and it visits Kennesaw on Nov. 7.

The bowl result is worth noting too. A 41-6 loss to Western Michigan was the largest margin of the season and a reminder of the gap between winning this conference and competing outside it.
