Syracuse vs Virginia NCAAF Preview
Syracuse Orange Betting Preview
Syracuse enters Charlottesville at 2-2 following an absolutely wild 42-41 overtime victory over UConn, and while I'm not particularly interested in blindly chasing last week's offensive explosion, there was one development that completely changed my outlook on this offense: QB Amari Odom.
The Kennesaw State transfer made his first start in place of Steve Angeli and immediately provided the type of efficiency Syracuse had been missing, completing 27-of-37 passes for 335 yards and five touchdowns.
Odom did throw two interceptions, but the difference in the passing game was impossible to ignore.
Through his early appearances, Odom has completed 76.6% of his passes for 391 yards and six touchdowns, while Angeli has completed just 54.8% with four touchdowns and five interceptions.
That's a pretty significant upgrade in efficiency, even if we're still dealing with a small sample.
Odom also provides a threat with his legs, which can help the Cuse offense stretch the field a bit more.
WR Umari Hatcher has been the primary beneficiary of Syracuse's passing attack, hauling in 29 receptions for 434 yards and five touchdowns.
Hatcher gives Odom a legitimate downfield weapon, and his ability to generate explosives becomes particularly important against a Virginia defense that's been vulnerable when opponents successfully establish favorable down-and-distance situations.
The Orange also have some encouraging underlying numbers. Syracuse is generating 3.6 points per scoring opportunity, while its offensive line is allowing havoc on only 12.6% of snaps.
That's important because Odom doesn't necessarily need perfect protection to create scoring opportunities, but avoiding the negative plays that plagued Syracuse earlier this season should allow the Orange to sustain considerably more possessions.
I'm not expecting another five-touchdown performance from Odom, but I do think the quarterback change raises the ceiling of an offense that was becoming far too predictable.
HC Fran Brown is running out of time to show he’s the guy to run this football program, so Saturday will be an important test.

Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview
Virginia is coming off an ugly 38-7 loss to Florida State, and I think that box score is creating an opportunity to buy low on an offense that's been considerably more productive throughout the season.
QB Beau Pribula has completed 67.8% of his passes for 961 yards, 12 touchdowns and only one interception, while averaging 8.1 yards per attempt.
Those are strong numbers for an offense that's occasionally struggled to maintain consistency on the ground. RB Jekail Middlebrook has rushed for 242 yards, while Virginia's offensive line is generating 3.29 line yards per attempt and allowing havoc on 13.1% of its snaps.
That protection should give Pribula opportunities to attack a Syracuse defense that's been considerably more vulnerable than its early-season results suggested.
The Orange are generating an 18.5% defensive havoc rate, so Virginia will need to protect the football. But there's also a clear path toward creating scoring opportunities if Pribula can consistently attack the intermediate portions of the field.
Virginia is averaging 4.1 points per scoring opportunity, compared to just 3.6 for Syracuse. The Cavaliers have been considerably more efficient once they cross the opponent's 40-yard line, and that becomes especially important when we're betting a total just above 50.
Virginia also has some injury concerns worth monitoring, particularly at the skill positions, with WR Trell Ward and RB Peyton Lewis among the players who have appeared on recent injury reports.
Those statuses deserve another check before kickoff, but I think they should score enough points against the Orange to win the game.

Syracuse vs Virginia Picks, Betting Analysis
This total is sitting around 50.5, and I'm willing to buy into the offensive upside on both sides rather than letting Virginia's ugly performance against Florida State scare me away.
This is definitely an ugly buy-low spot on the Virginia offense, but the biggest adjustment for me is Syracuse's quarterback situation.
Odom's 335-yard, five-touchdown debut gives the Orange a considerably higher offensive ceiling than we saw with Angeli, particularly with Hatcher capable of creating explosive plays downfield.
On the other side, Pribula has thrown 12 touchdowns against only one interception, and Virginia is generating 4.1 points per scoring opportunity. The havoc numbers also suggest both offenses should have opportunities to sustain possessions.
Syracuse allows havoc on 12.6% of its offensive snaps, while Virginia allows it on 13.1%, meaning neither offensive line has been particularly prone to allowing drive-killing negative plays.
Both defenses can create disruption, but I'm more interested in the potential for explosive passing plays and touchdowns once these offenses get into scoring position.
There's also an interesting market discrepancy that's worth noting here.
Virginia opened around -6.5 before getting bet up toward -9.5, yet the total has remained relatively stagnant around 50.5.
If the market is correct about Virginia's offensive advantage, I think Syracuse has enough firepower with Odom to score enough points to push this game into the 50s.
Pick: Over 50.5
