Duke Blue Devils Betting Preview: Much to Prove

Duke is 4-0, has won eight straight games dating back to last season and allows only 11 points per contest. That makes backing a 1-3 Georgia Tech team against the defending ACC champions look pretty disgusting on the surface.

The Blue Devils have been outstanding defensively, and HC Manny Diaz deserves plenty of credit for maintaining that identity, but their offensive success has been built largely around controlling the line of scrimmage and consistently creating manageable down-and-distance situations.

RB Nate Sheppard has been the engine of the offense, rushing for 644 yards in four games, while Duke averages an ACC-best 243.5 rushing yards per contest.

That production is legitimate, but I'm not convinced the Blue Devils will be able to establish the same offensive rhythm on the road against a Georgia Tech front that's shown flashes of being disruptive.

QB Walker Eget has thrown for 721 yards, and while Duke has been efficient enough offensively, this isn't a passing attack that I'm particularly interested in laying a full touchdown with on the road.

The Blue Devils also have a concerning havoc profile on offense. They're allowing havoc on just 8.5% of their offensive snaps, which speaks to their ability to protect the football and avoid negative plays, but that number also makes the matchup in the trenches especially important.

If Georgia Tech can force Sheppard into second-and-long situations rather than letting him consistently gain four or five yards on early downs, Duke could find itself playing a much different game.

Duke has played a soft schedule so far, especially given how bad Illinois has been in 2026. The Blue Devils have won against Tulane, Illinois, Stanford and William & Mary.

I don’t think the Blue Devils will necessarily lose, but this is a ton of points to lay on the road when they don’t have a proven track record yet.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Betting Preview: Good Enough Offense

Georgia Tech is 1-3 and coming off a 34-27 loss to Stanford, which won't exactly have recreational bettors lining up to grab the Yellow Jackets.

I'm willing to buy low, as I have far too much respect for HC Brent Key.

The Jackets have been considerably more competitive than their record suggests, and although the defense has struggled against the run, there are still reasons to believe Key's team can keep this game inside a touchdown.

QB Alberto Mendoza gives Georgia Tech a legitimate passing threat, while RB Justice Haynes provides the type of explosive rushing ability that can prevent Duke from simply sitting back and dictating the game defensively.

Haynes is particularly important because Georgia Tech needs to stay ahead of schedule against a Diaz defense that thrives when opponents are forced into obvious passing situations.

The Yellow Jackets have also dealt with significant injuries along the offensive line and on defense, so the availability report is worth monitoring closely.

That's a legitimate concern rather than something I'm going to pretend doesn't matter. However, Georgia Tech has already shown it can create scoring opportunities against ACC competition, and playing at home should provide a considerably friendlier environment than its recent road trips.

The offense is good enough to keep this one close, and I'm curious to see how this Duke offense performs against a more respectable opponent on the road.

Duke vs Georgia Tech Pick, Betting Analysis

This is one of those spots where I'm willing to buy an ugly home 'dog against a team whose record has created a significant perception gap. Duke is undefeated and coming off a bye, while Georgia Tech is sitting at 1-3 following another frustrating loss.

There's no question which team the public will feel more comfortable backing. The problem is that laying a full touchdown on the road with an offense built around rushing efficiency leaves little margin for error if the opponent can stay within striking distance.

Duke's 243.5 rushing yards per game are impressive, but Georgia Tech doesn't necessarily need to completely shut down Sheppard to cover this number.

The Jackets need to create enough negative plays to force Eget into obvious passing situations, protect Mendoza and give Haynes opportunities to generate explosives.

If conditions deteriorate, I think the additional variance could make laying seven points considerably less attractive. This could turn into a real slop fest.

Duke may very well be the better football team, but I'm not convinced the Blue Devils deserve to be laying a full touchdown in Atlanta.

I'll hold my nose and grab the home 'dog.

Pick: Georgia Tech +6.5
