Houston Cougars Betting Preview: Simple But Effective

Just when it looked like Houston was going to suffer a second loss in Big 12 play, the Cougars were able to rattle off 27 straight points in the second half en route to a 27-17 victory over UCF.

Even though Conner Weigman was unable to get into a groove through the air, he was able to make up for it on the ground, gashing the Golden Knights for 50 yards while punching in three scores with his legs.

Weigman’s versatility under center has helped turn Houston’s offense into one of the more efficient units in the nation, leading the sport in success rate while ranking in the top 25 in points per opportunity and havoc allowed.

While the lack of explosiveness is a cause for concern, the Cougars are able to mask it by methodically moving the ball down the field while controlling the time of possession in the process.

Houston’s one-two punch in the backfield has also helped pull defensive attention to the box, with Re’Shaun Sanford II and Makhi Hughes both averaging more than 4.5 yards per carry while leading the Cougars to above-league-average marks in rush success rate and in PPA.

Weigman also gives Houston another pair of legs to lean on, making it difficult to slow the Cougars down before the offense gets into scoring position.

While the offense has thrived, the Cougars haven't fared on the other side of the ball, slipping down to 136th in finishing drives and 128th in explosiveness.

Kansas State Wildcats Betting Preview: Struggling With an Identity

With Texas Tech, Utah and BYU hogging the spotlight, Kansas State quietly lurked in the shadows as a sleeper to win the Big 12 due to the Wildcats' favorable schedule.

Unfortunately for Kansas State, a loss to Cincinnati has kicked the Wildcats out of the driver’s seat for the conference title, giving Collin Klein’s squad no room for error with six games remaining on the schedule.

Avery Johnson’s inconsistencies in the pocket played a major role in Kansas State’s loss to Cincinnati, as he completed just 60% of his passes.

Even when Johnson was able to make up for it on the ground, his inability to connect with his pass catchers made the offense vulnerable to stalling out.

When Johnson is on, Kansas State is dangerous — evident by ranking 11th in success rate, 11th in points per opportunity and fourth in havoc allowed.

Like Houston, the Wildcats have also struggled to create explosive plays, yet are able to make up for it by taking care of the ball while consistently staying ahead of the sticks.

The Wildcats' defense, on the other hand, is a different story, ranking near dead last in defensive explosiveness and in finishing drives while giving up nearly four points per opportunity.

Houston vs Kansas State Pick, Betting Analysis

With Houston and Kansas State fielding similar identities on defense, Saturday’s Big 12 tilt is poised to be an exciting one. Holding opponents out of the end zone has been a tall task, with both units limping into the contest ranked outside the top 100 in finishing drives, as previously mentioned.

The Wildcats and Cougars' inability to defend against the big play also gives Johnson and Weigman the opportunity to flip the field in a flash.

Negative regression is also looming large over both teams' success rate, with Johnson and Weigman capable of extending plays with their legs. That forces opposing linebackers to spy across the middle, which will leave the corners on islands.

If the linebackers drop back in coverage, this will create more room for the running backs to exploit, giving Kansas State and Houston more room to work with.

Bet the over at no higher than 58, with intentions of increasing your exposure should the total dip down to the key number of 55 before kickoff.

Pick: Over 55.5
