Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), also known as the Las Vegas airport, has completed a major $71 million upgrade to its baggage handling system. The three-year project was finished this month on time and within budget, and it covers both of the airport’s main terminals.

The improvements are designed to help bags move more smoothly through the airport, reduce congestion near baggage claim, and make travel easier for the millions of people who pass through Las Vegas every year.

Although Sin City has been experiencing a tourism decline for more than a year, airport officials continue to find ways to improve.

“Modernizing our airport means investing in the infrastructure and technology that keep our operations running reliably and efficiently,” said James C. Chrisley, Clark County Director of Aviation. “These upgrades are an important step in improving baggage handling, easing congestion and creating a smoother, more efficient travel experience for our passengers.”

What Changed at the Las Vegas Airport?

The project focused on the airport’s Baggage Handling System, often called the BHS. This is the network of belts, carousels, conveyors, and computer controls that moves checked luggage from airplanes to passengers.

At Terminal 1, crews made major physical improvements. They upgraded eight baggage carousels and completely replaced eight others. Workers also installed new conveyors and new carousel columns with LED screens.

At Terminal 3, the work was more technology-focused. The airport modernized the computer hardware and software that control the baggage system. These updates help the airport operate its baggage equipment more reliably and efficiently.

With attractions like the "Heart-Shaped Hotel" and a new immersive Mike Tyson experience that is going to open at Flamingo, the improvements were needed.

Why the Baggage Upgrade is Important

Baggage claim can be one of the most stressful parts of air travel, especially at a busy airport like Harry Reid International Airport. When bags are delayed or baggage claim areas become crowded, travelers may feel frustrated after a long flight.

The new system is expected to improve baggage handling speed, support better passenger flow, and reduce congestion in important areas of the airport. In simple terms, the goal is to help travelers get their luggage and continue their trip with fewer delays.

Chrisley said the upgrades are an important step toward improving baggage handling, easing congestion, and creating a smoother travel experience for passengers. That's because officials hope the Las Vegas tourism decline is ending.

How the Las Vegas Airport Project Was Funded

The $71 million project was largely paid for through federal grants, including funding connected to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the bipartisan infrastructure law.

A major early source of funding was a $31 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program. Nevada Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto announced that funding in February 2023 to help modernize baggage systems in Terminals 1 and 3.

At the time, parts of Terminal 1’s inbound baggage system were about 40 years old. The funding was intended to increase capacity, improve reliability, support energy efficiency, and better serve passengers with disabilities.

A Big Step in LAS Modernization

Harry Reid International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States, but has seen its numbers drop.

It serves as a major gateway to Las Vegas tourism, conventions, sports, and large events. Because passenger traffic remains strong, dependable baggage systems are an important part of the airport’s long-term plans.

The baggage upgrade is one part of a larger modernization effort at the Las Vegas airport. Airport leaders are also planning future improvements to add capacity, update older infrastructure, and prepare for continued growth in Southern Nevada.

If you're flying through Harry Reid International Airport you should notice the improvements most when picking up checked bags. New carousels, conveyors, LED screens, and updated controls are intended to make baggage claim less crowded and more organized.

The project did not change the airport’s name, terminals, or basic travel process. However, it represents a meaningful investment in the everyday travel experience at the Las Vegas airport.
