Colts vs Chiefs Spread Prediction
Tonight's Sunday Night Football matchup presents us with a classic case of buying low and selling high.
The Chiefs steamrolled the Broncos on Monday Night Football as underdogs; the Colts, meanwhile, were blown out by Lamar Jackson and the rejuvenated Ravens.
Kansas City and Kenneth Walker made easy work of the Broncos' run defense — but I question whether that's repeatable against a typically solid Colts run defense. Indianapolis was picked apart by the Ravens, but Kansas City is no longer built to beat teams that way.
The Chiefs don't have the type of receivers to run it up through the air anymore. The Colts can run the ball with Jonathan Taylor, control clock, and make this a slow, grindy game.
Kansas City is not built to blow out teams anymore; the Chiefs have won by more than one score only nine times over the last two years.
The trends support the Colts to cover in this spot as well:
- Road underdogs coming off a double-digit loss are 83% against the spread (ATS) since 2014.
- Underdogs of 3-to-7 points that failed to cover in Week 1 are 70% ATS since 2014.
- Favorites — the Chiefs in this spot — playing a second straight home game cover at a 30% rate.
The player- and coach-specific trends also like Indy:
- Patrick Mahomes as a favorite of more than three points is 43% ATS
- Daniel Jones as a road underdog is 66% ATS
- Colts head coach Shane Steichen is 7-3 ATS in the first three weeks of the season
One more: Any time a team that just won by 17+ points faces a team that just lost by 17+ points, history says it's a good idea to back the losing side, which covers at 59% ATS.
It's possible the spread moves to Colts +7 as kickoff nears so keep an eye out for that — but +6.5 is more than bettable if that's all you have.

In lieu of making a pick on the over/under, I'm attacking a different market for Sunday Night Football: first team to score.
The Colts were the most reliable team last season in terms of receiving after winning the coin flip — they did so six times. They picked up right where they left off this season, choosing to receive the ball first in Week 1 against the Ravens (and scoring the first touchdown of the day on Sunday).
The Chiefs, however, take a more standard approach of almost always deferring.
I'm hoping the Colts can at least muster a field goal on the opening drive or stop the Chiefs and score on the third (or fifth, etc) drive of the game.
The fact that the Colts are significant underdogs does not make this a comfortable play, but I’d still favor Indianapolis to score first if I were setting the lines.

Keenan Allen Anytime Touchdown Pick
We weren't sure how much the Colts were going to use Allen after he was signed late in the summer, but he had a great 67% snap rate in Week 1 and got good volume — six targets for six receptions and 32 yards — with one of those targets coming in the red zone.
Allen is still a great route runner, and I expect him to be a great safety net for Jones, especially in the red zone.
I have the true odds on Allen around +350 to score.

Tyquan Thornton Receiving Yards Prop

You might not have realized this since he had no catches in Week 1, but Tyquan Thornton ran a route on 70% of Patrick Mahomes' dropbacks. And it's worth noting Thornton's one target was a deep ball.
Mahomes didn't have to throw it much on Monday Night Football with Kenneth Walker eviscerating the Broncos defense.
The Colts' game plan is to slow down Walker while also focusing on Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Travis Kelce. There's a chance Mahomes takes some deep shots to Thornton in this game.
I wouldn't take his median prop of 15.5 yards — he's going to end up with no yards or 50.
