Rams vs 49ers Week 10 Preview
The Rams are undoubtedly great; they are right there with the Seahawks as the cream of the crop in the NFC at the moment — but for me, this is always going to be a 49ers spot as home underdogs.
This spread was at just +3.5, and it's continuing to move in the Rams' direction. It's as high as Rams -5 at some sportsbooks.
These teams played in early October, when an injury-ravaged 49ers squad — it's only gotten worse for San Francisco on that front since — got a lucky win thanks to a Kyren Williams fumble and big game from Mac Jones.
That makes this a revenge spot for the Rams, but 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan tends to have Sean McVay's number.
The 49ers defense is still decimated, and there are questions about their quarterback situation as well. It’s probably going to be Jones filling in for Brock Purdy again, but that might not be such a bad thing, and they could get Ricky Pearsall back, too.
The Rams are also standing on somewhat shaky ground — and they aren't typically as good when playing outdoors.
Puka Nacua is seemingly getting knocked out of every game, even if he’s still putting up top-10 numbers. Matthew Stafford is far from scrambling, but he's just slinging touchdown passes.
The Rams' recent strength of schedule also hasn't been that impressive. They beat up on the Saints and Jaguars, and also blew out a Ravens team missing Lamar Jackson.
The 49ers offense won't be any less healthy than it was in Week 5 when Jones went off. I think they can put up points again in this spot.
Rams vs 49ers Prediction, Betting Analysis
The coaching matchup is the great equalizer; this is the type of situation where the game should be inside a field goal.
Since 2019, the Rams and 49ers have faced each other 14 times — the underdog is 13-1 against the spread (ATS). Looking at the Shanahan vs. McVay matchup, Shanahan has a 37% ROI against McVay and a 61% straight up (SU) winning percentage on the moneyline.
When McVay is off a multi-game winning streak, the Rams come back down to earth a little bit. They’re 17-28 ATS (38%).
The Rams' kicking situation is also a wild card. Their normal kicker, Joshua Karty, will be sidelined for Harrison Mevis, who was just signed and has never kicked in the NFL.
Fundamentally, I think the Rams are favored by too many points today. Give me the Niners at anything more than plus a field goal.
Pick: 49ers +4.5 (-110)
