Panthers vs 49ers Spread Prediction
By Billy Ward
While the Panthers have continued to rise in our Luck Rankings they still rank well behind the 49ers, with San Francisco at 8 and Carolina at 15. That makes intuitive sense, as the public perception fo the 49ers also seems to remain higher than the on-field product they’ve produced this season.
Both teams in this game are bottom-ten defenses by DVOA, with the Panthers actually ranking one spot ahead of the 49ers. San Francisco is certainly a better offensive team, but Bryce Young is beginning to show some ability, albeit inconsistently. While he’s hard to trust on a weekly basis, a matchup against the 49ers pass rush – which ranks dead last in adjusted line yards – certainly boosts his odds of a solid day.
More importantly, the Panthers have found their identity as a run-first offense behind Rico Dowdle. They should be able to find plenty of success against the 49ers on the ground, as I have this projected as one of the better run-blocking matchups of the week.
Will that be enough to upset the 49ers outright? Probably not. However, the spread has moved past the key number of seven at some books, and the Panthers should at least be able to control the ball well enough to keep things close.
For that reason I’m on the Panthers at the +7.5 line offered at most books. The best odds are -112 at DraftKings, but I’d take the 7.5 points down to -120.
Pick: Panthers +7.5 (-112)
Panthers vs 49ers Over/Under Pick
Both the Panthers and 49ers are struggling to defend the pass. Bryce Young is coming off the best performance of his career and should have an opportunity to remain highly efficient against a 49ers defense that ranks 30th in EPA/play when defending the pass over the past six weeks.
Dating back even further, the 49ers are last in the NFL in generating pressure over their last nine games. Since the loss of Nick Bosa to injury, this defense simply cannot get to the quarterback with an abysmal 2.3% sack rate. Young should have plenty of time to operate and he’ll have the benefit of his full cast of weapons being healthy.
The 49ers’ passing offense looked sharp with the return of Brock Purdy last week. The Panthers are 25th in pressure rate this season, which should allow the 49ers to remain explosive and efficient. The 49ers boast the league’s best passing attack in terms of success rate.
Both coaches would be bailing out the opposing defense if they opt to lean on the run. I expect an abundance of passing attempts in a game that sees plenty of points. I’d play this over up to 51.
Pick: Over 49.5 (-110); bet to Over 51
Panthers vs 49ers Player Props: Christian McCaffrey
By Nick Galaida
Christian McCaffrey hasn’t routinely cleared this number this season, but he’s well-positioned for a big game tonight facing a Panthers defense that will essentially be without their entire starting linebacker corps.
In Week 11, the Panthers allowed 114 rushing yards to Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier on only 28 carries with LB Trevin Wallace not on the field. Tonight, LB Christian Rozeboom — the team’s leading tackler — has also been ruled out. LB Pat Jones is already on injured reserve, too.
McCaffrey played a season-low 39 snaps last week due to a blowout game script. He should be fresh and ready to handle close to 20 carries tonight. The over has good value here.
Pick: Christian McCaffrey Over 71.5 Rushing Yards (-114)
Panthers vs 49ers Player Props: George Kittle
The Panthers are dead last in DVOA against tight ends, bottom five defending the middle of the field, and have allowed the fourth-most yards to tight ends.
Carolina has faced top-15 fantasy tight ends in only five games so far this season — three out of five of those players scored a touchdown and they averaged 4.8 receptions for 61 yards.
Don't forget, the Panthers were the second-worst team against tight ends last year as well, when they surrendered the most TDs to the position.
George Kittle has a touchdown in four of his six games this season; he's scored in seven of his last 15 games.
In his last 14 games with Brock Purdy at quarterback, he's averaged 75 yards so I'm taking the over on his receiving yards as well.
Picks: George Kittle Over 54.5 Receiving Yards (-110) | George Kittle Anytime Touchdown (+145)
