Canada opens the Olympic tournament as the favorite, taking on Czechia on Thursday morning. Canada is a massive -700 favorite in this matchup and should begin the tournament in strong form, but that does not mean Czechia cannot find the back of the net.

If anyone is going to score for Czechia, it is likely David Pastrnak, one of the NHL’s premier pure goal scorers. Czechia is coming off an impressive 2024 IIHF World Championship victory as it returns to international play after being left out of the 4 Nations tournament.

That omission left a bad taste in Pastrnak's mouth, who said he refused to watch the 4 Nations event. He also scored for Czechia in the 2024 IIHF World Championship gold medal game.

As much as this play backs Pastrnak, it is also a fade of goaltender Jordan Binnington, who is expected to start for Canada. Goaltending is Canada’s primary concern entering this tournament, as Binnington has struggled in the NHL this season.

Over his past 25 starts, Binnington is 6-14-5 with an .862 save percentage and a 3.79 goals-against average.

Staying with the same game, Czechia presents a different outlook in net. Lukas Dostal was the hero of the 2024 IIHF World Championship run, earning best goaltender honors.

During that tournament, Dostal posted a .939 save percentage and a 1.58 goals-against average. Czechia will once again rely heavily on him, but Canada is still likely to control possession.

Canada should spend most of the game in the offensive zone, which benefits the shots-on-goal prop for first-line center Connor McDavid. He and Macklin Celebrini will drive scoring chances, while Tom Wilson works in a net-front role for that top line.

McDavid should not have difficulty recording at least three shots on goal as he fires the puck towards Wilson in front early and often.

Following Canada vs. Czechia, the United States opens its tournament against Latvia. The U.S. is favored to win by four to five goals, and if that projected margin materializes, Auston Matthews is likely to be involved.

Matthews enters the tournament in strong form, scoring 12 goals over his past 20 NHL games.

Goaltending could be an issue for Latvia, with Arturs Silovs projected to start in goal. Over his past 16 NHL starts, Silovs owns a .877 save percentage and a 3.26 goals-against average.

Pick: Auston Matthews Any Time Goal Scorer (+115, FanDuel)
