At this rate, it will only be a few more weeks before the Arizona Coyotes are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. The Desert Dogs are off to a horrendous start from outcomes and analytics perspectives. That will make it tough to compete with the Seattle Kraken, who are gaining momentum in both regards.

Kraken Are Due for Positive Regression

The Kraken have three wins over their past four games and will be looking to build off their 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres last time out. Seattle has had a recent surge in scoring, scoring four or more in three of their past five, and has the underlying metrics to support ongoing offensive success.

At five-on-five, the Kraken have out-chanced their opponents in scoring and high-danger chances in six straight games. The Kraken have been extremely efficient on both ends of the ice, creating 23.3 scoring and 9.8 high-danger chances per game while allowing 13.5 and 3.8, respectively. That translates to dominant relative metrics, with the Kraken out-chancing their opponents at a 63.3% scoring chance rate and 72.1% high-danger rate over their past six games.

Despite the dominance, the results are just starting to go the Kraken's way, and they are underachieving relative to their production metrics. The Kraken have the third-worst PDO and remain almost 8.0% off their expected total. That makes them progression candidates over their next stretch of games.

Deck Stacked Against Tired Coyotes

The Coyotes can't get any traction going this season. They are near the bottom of most relative metrics and have failed to string together consecutive good outings at any point this season. Arizona has been particularly bad over their recent stretch, making it unlikely they compete against the Kraken on Saturday.

Heading into Friday's action, the Coyotes had compiled a 40.8% expected goals-for percentage at five-on-five over their previous five games. Offense has been of particular concern, as the Coyotes attempted more than six high-danger chances just once over that span. Shots and scoring chances were even more abysmal, with the Yotes attempting an average of 18.8 and 16.6 per game over the five-game sample.

The Coyotes are failing to compete night in and night out. Compounding Arizona's problems is that they are playing on the second night of a back-to-back against a rested Kraken squad. Arizona has played only one other back-to-back this season, and it posted a 36.1% expected goals-for percentage on the second night.

Kraken vs. Coyotes Pick

The Coyotes haven't been able to compete on a good night, let alone coming in tired. The Kraken are coming in rested with metrics on their side. This price should shift in Seattle's favor as we inch closer to puck drop, and that's because it's the right side to be on. Buy early before the price shifts higher.

Pick: Kraken -155
