Flyers vs. Capitals Preview

This hasn't been an ideal start to the season for the Flyers, and last night's loss to the Blue Jackets proved just that. They went down 3-0 in the first period, putting them in an unnecessarily large hole.

Slowly but surely, Philly bounced back after scoring once in the second period and twice in the third to tie it up, only to lose in overtime.

The resiliency is a positive sign. The brutal deficit? Not so much. The first goal allowed was a great play by Kent Johnson. The last two were a sign of careless hockey.

Three straight goals in under three minutes for Columbus 🥵

Sure enough, the Flyers have to forget about last night, because they headed over to our nation's capital to face the Capitals immediately after the game.

Washington has had plenty of time to relax. It's played only twice in the past eight days, which has given goaltender Logan Thompson plenty of time to recalibrate after tweaking something in his lower body. Coach Spencer Carbery told the media that Thompson is getting close, but did not specify whether we see him tonight or not.

We'll find out more after morning skate, but my theory is that the Caps will rest him one more game and let Charlie Lindgren play a broken team playing a back end of a back-to-back.

On a standalone play, my model actually favors the Flyers more; however, given the circumstances, I like taking the Caps here. The last time the Flyers played a back-to-back was a week and a half ago and they got outscored by a combined score of 9-2.

Since the Caps are heavy favorites here, let's get a little more value here. On either DraftKings or FanDuel, you can parlay the Capitals moneyline and Under 6.5 for a +148 price.

Washington has been a strong scoring team, but Philly has been a black hole for offense. We have seen some positive regression in the past five games for the Flyers, but on a back-to-back, I'm leaning toward the under.
