Utah vs. Senators Preview
The case starts with the number. Claude Giroux Under 1.5 means he needs to finish with zero or one shot on goal, and at +115 you only need that to happen about 46.5% of the time to come out ahead.
Our PRO projections have him at 1.53 shots, which sits almost exactly on the line, so the value here is in the price, and that is where we find the 8.3% edge. For a player averaging 1.4 shots a game, with a role built around moving the puck, plus money on the under is a good deal.
The matchup and Giroux's recent log point the same way. Utah allows about 25 shots a game, so there is not much volume to go around for any Ottawa forward, and Giroux's linemates and power-play partners are the ones who take the shots.
His own log over the past five games reads 1, 0, 0, 3 and 3, which means he was held to one shot or fewer in three of those games, and one source has the under at 1.5 hitting in 10 of his last 20. His 24 shots in 17 games works out to 1.41 a game, below the line.
A close game, which is what the market expects, should also keep Giroux near his usual 16 to 17 minutes.
The risk is that his last two games were both three-shot nights, including a goal at Anaheim, and that the Senators are short on forwards with Greig, Burakovsky, Foegele and Eklund out, which could push him into more minutes or a higher line.
Utah's penalty kill has also been weak, and if the Mammoth take penalties, Giroux gets extra looks on the first power-play unit. A couple of those chances and a loose puck near the net could get him to two quickly, but with a projection that sits on the line and a +115 price, the under is the better side.
Best Bet: Claude Giroux Under 1.5 Shots on Goal (+115, BetMGM)
