Mammoth vs. Golden Knights Preview

Utah Mammoth

Utah has been a tremendously exciting team to watch this season. But what’s been the driving force behind this squad is the trio of Dylan Guenther-Logan Cooley-Kailer Yamamoto.

That line is currently the third best line in all of the playoffs, with a 2.8 xGF%, but have also been rather impressive on the defensive end, posting a 1.25 xGA.

Guenther is the star of the show, having the best regular season of his career, posting 40 goals, but don’t sleep on Cooley. Had Cooley not gone down earlier in the season, he’d undoubtedly break his career high in goals and challenge his career high in points.

Another star of this series has been Lawson Crouse, who’s shown his value in the playoffs, with a pair of goals and assists. This is Crouse’s second stint in the playoffs, and players like him usually thrive in the postseason with his consistent physicality.

The Mammoth defense has also held on really strongly. Mikhail Sergachev was, and still is, expectedly the team’s top defenseman, but adding MacKenzie Weegar has taken a lot of pressure off him..

Utah has some decent playmakers on the blueline, but it’s primarily a defensive-first core. Adding Weegar has added the perfect playmaker dynamic to this squad.

For the Mammoth, the one part of the game that I’m continuously going to wonder about is goaltending. I like Karel Vejmelka. He’s a decent goaltender, but extraordinarily inconsistent.

I think he completely misread the first goal from Pavel Dorofeyev and then made a mental flub that caused Brett Howden’s first goal of the night.

Vegas Golden Knights

John Tortorella has ignited life into the Golden Knights.

Before he arrived, the team was playing well, but the wins were not there. And then Carter Hart got healthy and excelled.

When Hart came in midseason, he was definitely a little skittish, but he’s made some important saves.

It’s always going to be tough against the Mammoth, who wields several dynamic playmakers, but he has kept Vegas alive in this stretch.

The overtime goal from Shea Theodore in the final minute silenced a raucous Salt Lake City crowd on Monday and prevented the game from going into double OT.

Torts has done a wonderful job at in-game adjustments, as we’ve seen both Howden and Dorofeyev line up with Jack Eichel and Ivan Barbashev, and it’s paid off dividends.

Both combos were net positives on the ice, especially the combo featuring Howden, who was relentlessly peppering shots against Vejmelka.

Mammoth vs. Golden Knights Prediction

I’ve had a hard time getting a read on this series considering both teams have played on an even playing-field.

But right now, I do like playing the over though.

Both venues have split the series, so it can go either way on the moneyline. Not just that, Vegas has been a quality home team, while Utah is no slouch on the road either.

So when you look at the series from a 10,000-foot point of view, you’ll see that all games except for one have gone over the allotted 5.5 total.

I’m not fully sold on either goaltender to play lights out, and it’s clear that this has been more of a series centered around playmakers and goal scorers.

Pick: Over 5.5 (-134, FanDuel)
