Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas is going through a real rough stretch, losing three in a row, all at home, but also six out of its last seven games.
On New Year’s Eve, I wrote about the Golden Knights and the Predators taking on each other, and it’s just been a revolving door of goaltenders, with no real established #1.
Carter Hart joined the team in early December and he’s gotten the majority of the starts, but Hart hasn’t been very good in his past few starts. He was laced on Monday the 29th against the Wild by letting up five goals on 12 shots, and an .830 SV%.
I’m truly not concerned with the skill players on the Golden Knights. Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner are looking the part of an elite tandem. It’s everyone else in between I’m worried about.
Defensively, the Knights have been a nightmare, with longtime Knight Brayden McNabb being a liability, as well as Kaden Korczak, who has seen an increase in minutes.
St. Louis Blues
For the Blues' sake, you wonder if their 2026 is going to be much different than 2025.
I’m very down on St. Louis, even though it’s only a few points away from the final playoff spot.
Regardless, this team will only go as far as the goaltending will take them. Joel Hofer has been playing fantastically and I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts today. Jordan Binnington started on New Year’s Eve and unsurprisingly got lit up by the Avalanche.
You wouldn’t know that Hofer was the more reliable guy here, though, especially since Binnington, with his .869 SV%, was named to Team Canada in the upcoming Olympics. Hofer, on the other hand, is playing to a .932 and 5.2 GSAx in his past nine starts.
There’s not much else here. Jordan Kyrou has been invisible since the end of October, while Dylan Holloway and Pius Suter have been hurt.
Jim Montgomery is usually a good coach, but it’s extremely difficult to get the most out of your players if they’re checked out, which it certainly seems like they are. All of December, they’ve been among the lowest 5-on-5 teams on both ends of the ice.
Golden Knights vs. Blues Prediction
Both teams here are playing a very similar style, given how poorly they’ve been during this stretch.
However, I tend to lean on high ceilings and firepower with the chance of the depth going off.
Beyond the usual suspects, Pavel Dorofeyev is a fantastic goal scorer, as have been Braeden Bowman, Tomas Hertl, and Ivan Barbashev.
I’d usually get excited about the Blues, but their lack of competitive fire has me hesitant about putting any form of currency on them. It’s a talented roster that’s playing incredibly unmotivated right now.
I like Vegas here straight up.
