The model had Spain as the narrow favorite and the final broke that way, though tighter than projected — the 2.5 goal total went under. Spain entered the tournament as a co-favorite at +450 alongside France, and became just the fifth team since 1962 to enter as the market favorite and actually lift the trophy. Argentina fall short of back-to-back titles; no nation has repeated since Brazil in 1962.

The ten goals made this the highest-scoring third-place match in World Cup history, passing France's 6–3 win over West Germany in 1958, and the highest-scoring knockout game of any kind since Austria beat Switzerland 7–5 in 1954.
