Duke Blue Devils 2026 Season Preview

Nobody outside Durham penciled in a Duke Blue Devils ACC championship before last season, and that is exactly what happened. Manny Diaz's team finished the 2025 regular season 6-2 in conference play, then knocked off Virginia in overtime to win the program's first outright ACC title since 1962, and capped a 9-5 year with a Sun Bowl win over Arizona State.

Diaz is 18-9 across two seasons in Durham and signed a contract extension this offseason.

The story of Duke's offseason, though, isn't the trophy. It's Darian Mensah. The quarterback threw for a school-record 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns in 2025, then reversed a two-year NIL commitment on the final day of the transfer portal window and left for Miami.

Duke sued to block the move, the sides settled, and Mensah signed with the Hurricanes on a reported NIL package worth up to $10 million.

His top target, Cooper Barkate, who caught 72 passes for 1,106 yards, followed him to Coral Gables. Duke opens the season replacing its top five pass-catchers from a year ago.

The spread levels the two teams by adding or subtracting points, with the favorite marked by a minus sign and the underdog by a plus sign at the same number.

If books list Duke as a 3.5-point underdog to a stronger ACC opponent, a Duke bettor covers by losing within three points, or winning outright.

The favorite's bettors need a win by four or more.

Totals ask bettors to project combined scoring rather than a winner or margin. If a book sets a Duke game total at 52.5, the over needs 53 or more combined points and the under needs 52 or fewer.

Uneven juice on a total, say -120 on the under against -102 on the over, reflects where tickets and money are landing relative to the book's opening number, not a signal about which side is statistically correct. Books shade a number to balance their liability, and that shading is information about market behavior, not a verdict on the game itself. 

That's exactly where betting splits earn their spot in a bet slip. The public-betting page separates ticket share from money share, and the gap between the two is the useful part. If 70% of tickets sit on the over but only 45% of the dollars do, the bigger bets are on the under, and that split says more than either percentage alone.

Say a book prices Duke at -150 against a mid-tier ACC opponent and the other side at +130. Converting to implied probability, -150 works out to about 60%, and +130 works out to about 43.5%. Add those together and the total is roughly 103.5%, not 100%. 

That gap is the book's built-in margin, sometimes called the vig, and it's the same reason the favorite's number and the underdog's number never sum to an even 100 no matter which game you check.

Duke opened the 2026 season at a 5.5 win total across BetMGM, DraftKings and other major books, tied for the widest single-book agreement in the ACC and a signal that the roster turnover, not a specific book's model, is driving the number.

ESPN's FPI model gives Duke a 57.9% shot at bowl eligibility and roughly a 1-in-80 shot at another ACC title, both below where North Carolina and Georgia Tech sit in the same model.
