Red Sox vs Blue Jays MLB Betting Preview

Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

If you’re looking for a spot to back starting pitching and get the bullpens completely out of the equation, Sox/Jays Ranger Suárez against José Soriano gives us two starters whose underlying profiles are built to suppress crooked numbers, and I’m willing to bet this turns into a ground-ball-heavy rock fight early.

Let’s start with Suárez.

The lefty enters tonight at 4-3 with a 3.32 ERA, but the ERA isn’t doing all the talking here. FanGraphs has Suárez sitting around a 2.70 FIP with a 25.5% strikeout rate and roughly 7% walk rate. That combination is exactly what I want when betting an F5 Under: miss enough bats, limit the freebies and force the opponent to string hits together rather than handing out traffic.

The Statcast profile might be even prettier. Suárez has held hitters to an 86.7 mph average exit velocity, 33.9% hard-hit rate and just a 4.9% barrel rate this season. His actual wOBA allowed is .281 with a .293 xwOBA, so there isn't some massive regression monster hiding underneath the hood. Hitters simply haven't been squaring him up consistently.

That matters against Toronto, especially with George Springer out of tonight’s lineup. Kazuma Okamoto returns from his knee issue, but taking Springer out removes another dangerous right-handed bat against Suárez.

And then we get Soriano on the other side which is sneakily why I like this bet the most.

Toronto paid a serious prospect price to acquire him at the deadline, and you can understand why. Soriano comes in 9-6 with a 3.24 ERA and 130 strikeouts, and his strikeout rate has climbed to roughly 24.5% this season.

His calling card, though, is keeping the baseball on the damn ground. Soriano has long carried an extreme ground-ball profile, and that plays beautifully at Rogers Centre. He can attack hitters with power stuff, generate weak contact and avoid the cheap homer. He's still held hitters to a .289 wOBA while carrying legitimate swing-and-miss stuff.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays Pick, Betting Analysis

The form is there, too. Soriano has posted a 1.62 ERA over his last three appearances, and Boston's bats have cooled considerably after their ridiculous July heater. The Red Sox have scored only 10 runs over their last four games after averaging 10 runs per game during the previous five-game stretch.

That cooldown is exactly why I'm not scared off by Boston's overall offensive numbers.

I don't want anything to do with six innings of bullpen roulette here. Give me the starters, give me five innings, and get me out of dodge with a winning ticket.

Pick: Red Sox/Blue Jays F5 Under
