The Cubs are on the brink of elimination tonight. Their strong 2026 season was the fourth straight second-place NL Central finish, but it also featured likely MVP Pete Crow-Armstrong.
This Cubs team has one of the best offenses in baseball and an improved rotation (post-trade deadline). Unfortunately, their bullpen has been plagued all season by injuries (Daniel Palencia) and mediocrity (everyone else).
Nevertheless, Palencia is back in the mix and at full strength. Also, Ryan Zeferjahn has performed admirably after a rough August. Excellent peripherals back his 3.12 ERA in September, and he is hoping to carry that into the postseason.
The Cubs are in obvious must-win territory and have their ace Kevin Gausman on the mound to lead them.
San Diego Padres Betting Preview
The Padres are in the driver's seat and at home. This team faced an uphill battle throughout the season, but persevered through multiple hiccups to arrive.
Their 17-3 record in the past 20 regular season games saved this team, constructed to "win now," from a humiliating outcome.
This recent stretch was led by superstar Fernando Tatis Jr.'s midseason awakening. He slashed .325/.411/.602, with a 180 wRC+ in this 20-game span after starting the season with a 76 wRC+ from March 26 to May 10. He hit as many home runs in these 20 games as he did from the season opener to July 18!
Furthermore, the activation of tonight's starter, Nick Pivetta, and a resurgence from Jackson Merrill (160 wRC+ since September 4) helped the Padres ascend as well. If they want to win today, they will need to fire on all cylinders against a much tougher starter than Monday night.
Cubs vs Padres Pick, Betting Analysis
Pivetta takes the mound for the Padres tonight to face Gausman. Pivetta missed the majority of the 2026 MLB season due to an elbow injury, but returned in September for four starts.

Meanwhile, the Padres' offense looked incredible last night against Matthew Boyd, but they will face a tougher test versus Gausman. San Diego's offense is better against RHP (104 wRC+) than LHP (98 wRC+) this season, yet we could see them quieter than Monday night.
Gausman's season has been tumultuous and unlucky. His 4.50 ERA is backed by a 4.02 xERA, 3.58 xFIP, and 3.67 SIERA. However, he has a 3.02 xFIP and 3.21 SIERA since joining the Cubs. Gausman's given up harder contact than usual all season, but playing in the pitcher-friendly confines of Petco Park, he could be saved from excess damage.
The Padres have a significant bullpen advantage, yet that may not be enough with Gausman's advantage in the pitcher's duel and the Cubs' offensive strength.
