I think the Tigers are one of the most undervalued teams in baseball right now.
They traded their top two arms (Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize) at the deadline, as everyone started to believe they were punting on the season.
But the Tigers are just 3.5 games back in the AL Central, one game out of a Wild Card spot, and they’re playing their best baseball of the season.
They’re seeing some much-needed positive regression after a cursed first half. The Tigers are 56-59, but their +80 run differential is the second-best mark in the American League, suggesting a 67-48 expected win-loss record.
If it weren’t for a 15-27 record in one-run and extra-inning games, Skubal and Mize might still be pitching for the first-place Tigers.
This is still a very talented lineup. Sean Zerillo projects the top four hitters in the lineup with a better-than-120 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. Sure, the pitching staff is depleted, and the bullpen has been bad all year, but the four-man rotation (Framber Valdez, Keider Montero, Troy Melton, Drew Anderson) and the back end of the bullpen (Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan) have upside and room for positive regression.
I believe in the Tigers. I think they go on a run down the stretch, and I will be betting them often — especially against a lame-duck, identity-less team like the Giants.
