Yankees vs. Blue Jays
Between a plethora of injuries and underperformance, the Yankees’ lineup looks drastically different than it did to open the 2026 season.
Yet, even without Aaron Judge for most of the season, and with Ben Rice currently mired in a major slump, New York still finds itself surging toward a playoff berth.
The Bronx Bombers have received contributions from a variety of unsung heroes all season, and recently it’s been Trent Grisham’s turn to shoulder the load.
The 29-year-old has been scorching hot in August. He leads the team with four home runs over the past two weeks and has recorded 12 hits across his past 11 games. With a few of its stars still on the shelf, New York badly needs Grisham to keep the momentum going if the team has any chance at catching Tampa Bay at the top of the American League East.
Tonight, the Yankees travel to Toronto to face the Blue Jays and struggling right-hander Shane Bieber.
Grisham, who’s hitting .286 in August, has launched 12 of his 15 home runs this season against righties and has a great chance to add to that tally against a hittable arm.
The 2026 campaign has not been kind to the 31-year-old Bieber, who returned from injury in late June and has made nine starts for Toronto. Although he did rattle off a couple of stellar performances in July, he has regressed so far in August — Bieber most recently coughed up five earned runs in a very rough outing at Philadelphia last week.
He’s now allowed nine home runs across 42 2/3 innings of work this season and continues to regularly serve up hard contact, as evidenced by a 44.3% hard-hit rate allowed.
Bieber’s expected stats are even more alarming.
The veteran owns the worst xERA (7.24) and xWOBA (.399) of all qualified major league pitchers. In addition, his xBA (.302) ranks as the third-worst mark in the majors, and his xSLG (.547) ranks fourth.
All the signs are pointing toward a rough night at the Rogers Centre for Bieber and the Blue Jays, and Grisham is in a great spot to continue his role New York's catalyst.

Royals vs. Angels
The Royals and Angels open a three-game series in Anaheim tonight, and unlike the clash between the Yankees and Blue Jays, this matchup has exactly zero playoff implications.
However, there is still intrigue here between two teams who are searching for signs of positivity as the 2026 season comes to a close.
For the Angels, the re-emergence of Mike Trout would go a long way in giving the team some hope heading into the offseason.
The future Hall of Famer has posted some stellar numbers overall, but has seemed to be lacking in the power department throughout much of the summer — the 35-year-old tallied just one home run in the month of July. That being said, Trout has gone deep twice so far in August, and with 20 bombs on the season, he seems to be on pace to pass his total of 26 dingers from a season ago.
The expected stats highlight Trout’s prowess at the plate, even if the overall numbers appear a tad underwhelming. The Angels’ franchise player ranks sixth among all qualified major league hitters in xWOBA (.390) and 13th in xSLG (.511). In addition, his 16.5% barrel rate and 47.7% hard-hit rate are very close to the marks he has posted throughout his incredible career.
Trout is poised for a big weekend against Kansas City and its shaky pitching staff.
Veteran starter Seth Lugo gets the nod for the Royals tonight and is a fairly familiar foe for Trout, who has gone 1-for-3 with a home run in his career against the righty.
After a stellar month of July, the 36-year-old is another pitcher who is regressing so far in August. Lugo has allowed eight earned runs across his past two starts. He also really struggles on the road, where he owns a 5.31 ERA across 59 1/3 innings with 10 homers against.
Furthermore, Lugo’s struggles to keep right-handed bats in the yard should give Trout a great opportunity to go deep tonight. Lugo has conceded eight home runs to fellow righties this season in just 49 innings of work.

Rangers vs. Athletics
Although it has been another abysmal season for the Athletics, the organization has to be pleased with the rejuvenated performance it has received from Zack Gelof.
After two straight seasons with double-digit home runs to open his career, Gelof was a complete non-factor in 2025. He hit just .174 with a .502 OPS and went deep just twice a season ago, leaving many to believe he wouldn’t be a part of the team’s plans.
One year later, Gelof is hitting .280 with an .833 OPS and 13 home runs. The 26-year-old did miss significant time with injury this Summer. But otherwise, those numbers might look even better.
In fact, since his return from the IL earlier this month, Gelof has been outstanding. He’s gone 5-for-12 with a pair of home runs, while four of those 12 at-bats featured batted balls that were scorched over 95 MPH.
Something clear about Gelof is his propensity to rake at Sutter Health Park. Over the course of the 2026 campaign, Gelof is hitting .321 at home with 10 home runs and a .593 SLG. Furthermore, his .271 ISO in home games is just a tick behind star teammates Nick Kurtz and Tyler Soderstrom.
The good news for Gelof is that the homestand continues this weekend, as the Athletics host the Rangers for a three-game series in Sacramento.
Texas is trotting out young right-hander Kumar Rocker, who lasted just three innings and gave up a pair of homers in his last start against Baltimore. Rocker is trending in the wrong direction as of late — he’s allowed nine earned runs over the course of 8 1/3 innings in August. Of the 16 home runs he has allowed this year, four of them have come in the three starts he has made since the All-Star break.
Tonight, the 26-year-old Rocker will be tested once again as he leaves behind the friendly confines of Globe Life Field in Arlington in exchange for one of the most hitting-friendly environments in baseball.
