Tanner McGrath’s Mariners vs Twins Preview
One of my favorite Action Labs betting systems — powered by Evan Abrams — popped for this game.
Unders With Soft Starters and Neutral Winds targets Unders in regular-season MLB games where softer home starting pitchers (those with low strikeout rates and moderate WHIPs) are on the mound in games three or four of a series.
By this point in a series, hitters have seen multiple arms, so scouting reports are typically sharper. Still, scoring remains lower in weather-neutral environments, even when the starting pitcher lacks overpowering velocity.
With the home team in the middle of a season grind, the market often overlooks how these quiet conditions lead to slower-paced, lower-scoring outcomes.
For what it’s worth, this betting system is a staggering 24-6 this season (80% win, 50% ROI).
Seattle’s Emerson Hancock (5.13 xERA, 9.2% K-BB, 87 Stuff+) and Minnesota’s Simeon Woods Richardson (4.99 xERA, 10.6% K-BB, 88 Stuff+) are two softer pitchers. Still, this system is designed to find contrarian value in arms like that.
I’m somewhat higher on Hancock, who has pieced together several quality starts surrounded by three implosions against three of MLB’s better lineups (6 ER vs. DET, 7 ER vs. NYY, 9 ER vs. CHC). The Twins are a relatively average offense against right-handed pitching, and they’re in a slump (93 wRC+ over the past fortnight).
I’m worried about holding Seattle’s top-10 offense at bay, but the Twins have MLB’s best bullpen by fWAR (4.1). At the same time, the Mariners’ bullpen has been on a hot streak (3.78 xFIP over the past two weeks).
I’m willing to take a shot on the Under behind our Sports Insights tools.
