The Mariners dropped their series opener to the Yankees last night and have now lost five games in a row. While the Mariners may still be most talented team in the division, the AL West may turn into a two-team battle between the Rangers and Astros.
The Rangers are a half game back of the Astros, but still hold the third AL Wildcard spot by a half game over the surging Tigers.
However, if the Rangers are going to hold onto a playoff spot, they will need to do a better job of beating the teams they are supposed to, starting with the Angels. They fell 3-2 to the Angels last night to even up this series, but it was also their fifth loss to the Angels in eight games this season. They have been held to two runs or fewer of those losses.
Offense has been a question for the Rangers all season as they are 24th in runs scored. Injuries have been an issue as Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford have been in and out of the lineup. Both are back now, but Seager has not delivered a Seager-like season as he is hitting .192 with 11 home runs and a .664 OPS.
Joc Pederson extended his team lead in home runs with a leadoff homer last night, his 22nd of the year. The Angels made sure he would not beat them again as he walked his next three plate appearances before being pinch hit for.
Nathan Eovaldi was lined to start tonight's game, but he was placed on the IL with right posterior elbow inflammation. The Rangers will look internally to fill his spot with Cal Quantrill likely getting the nod over Jordan Montgomery.
Quantrill has been solid for the Rangers as he has a 3.57 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in his last 35 and 1/3 innings as a starter or bulk reliever.

On Friday, Mike Trout hit his sixth career home run on his birthday and the Angels went on to win 4-3 against the Marlins. He homered on Monday as well, hitting his 20th of the year.
He now has 11 seasons with 20 home runs, which is tied fourth-most among active players. However, many of those seasons for Trout have been wasted and 2026 looks like another on the list.
Despite being around .500 in day games, the Angels are just 28-54 in night games. It has resulted in the worst record in a wide-open American League as they are one of just three AL teams that is out of contention.
That turned the Angels into a seller at the deadline as they sent Jose Soriano to the Blue Jays, Jo Adell to the Guardians, and Ryan Zefferjahn to the Cubs.
Like the Rangers, runs have been at a premium for the Angels as they are 26th in runs scored this season. Since the All-Star break, they have scored just 58 runs in 23 games.
That may put pressure on their young right-hander George Klassen, who will be making his fourth career start tonight. Klassen has high-level stuff with three plus pitches, including a fastball that scouts gave a 70 on the 20-80 scale. He has been able to limit hard contact when he finds the strike zone, but that has been a rarity.
In just 8 and 2/3 innings, Klassen has issued 14 walks, which has led to a 2.88 WHIP. He has really struggled against right-handers as he has a 41% walk rate against him. If the Rangers wait him out, they may find success and get him out of the game early.
Rangers vs Angels Pick, Betting Analysis
In his first three outings, Klassen has averaged 4.7 walks per game and walked at least four batters in all three starts. He worked up his pitch count to the point that has not gone past four innings yet.
Tonight, he is still plus money for three walks and while he may give us the three walks early on, he will get the opportunity to face more batters if he is able to get through five innings tonight. Considering he has a 27% walk rate thus far, three walks feels likely.
The Rangers are a team that can take advantage as they are in the middle of the pack in walk rate against right-handed pitchers.
