Blue Jays Betting Preview: Berrios Brings Consistency

In a league that's constantly changing, it's nice to see some consistency. Jose Berrios is still very much Jose Berrios. Nine years after debuting in the big leagues, he's putting together a vintage Berrios season here in 2025.

The right-hander has a .452 Expected Slugging Percentage coming into his start on Wednesday — his highest since 2022 — and he's still maintaining an Expected Batting Average over the league average, with a 42% hard-hit rate, which is right about where he was last season.

I'm being tongue-in-cheek, of course, but there's some genuine appreciation here, given it can be hard to read pitchers who are tailoring their games differently in a new season and offering up different types of results.

Berrios is still rocking the same ground-ball rate he's worn for several years, allowing over a home run per nine, and putting up middling strikeout numbers, which are in line with his career average.

A new wrinkle is his 9.4% walk rate, which has hiked up 2.5 points, but it may be too early to draw any conclusions in that area, given he's seen improvements there in his last two starts.

Angels Betting Preview: Kikuchi's Struggles Continue

One of Berrios' former teammates, who's shown equal ineptitude for most of his career, will take the ball on the opposite side in the midst of a disastrous season.

The Houston Astros found a way to turn the human pitching machine into a serviceable arm last year, as Kikuchi reached a career high with a 28% strikeout rate. But now that he's struggled to get punch outs, there's not a whole lot to like here.

Not only is Kikuchi's strikeout rate down nearly eight points, his walk rate has ballooned to 11.7%, with four or more walks in three of his seven outings.

He's also shown a continued affinity for yielding well-struck fly balls, with an 11% barrel rate and .465 xSLG in the early going. He's now allowed six homers after the Detroit Tigers took him deep twice last time out.

I do want to quickly talk about this offense, because it's still incredibly flat. The Jays are hitting just .223 over the past two weeks with a low 7.7% walk rate, and while their strikeout rate is nice, it's not as if they're doing all that much damage with a .143 Isolated Power.

Blue Jays vs Angels Prediction, Moneyline Pick

We have two struggling fly-ball pitchers going at it in a home run hitter's paradise. The only issue is that Toronto ranks 28th in OPS against these types.

L.A. is the team that can smoke the ball, and while it's ranked only slightly higher in OPS to fly-ballers, it's still managed to top Toronto by around 80 points in slugging.

The Angels are simply being victimized by their absolutely horrid strikeout and walk numbers, but Berrios is all over the place with his command at the moment and hasn't wavered in his quest to allow home runs.

This is an excellent spot to play the Angels, even though they'll be running out one of my favorite arms to fade in the league.

Toronto simply isn't impacting the baseball right now, and even though it has the eighth-best wRC+ versus lefties this season, it's been largely walk and contact driven, with a measly .145 ISO, which represents no increase.

Pick: Angels Moneyline (+100)

Moneyline

The big money is on the Blue Jays here, and some of our experts are on Toronto as well.

Not this one, however.

Run Line (Spread)

Toronto is an impressive 21-14 to the run line this season and 8-5 when favored.

Over/Under

A whopping 92% of the bets are on the over here, and with two terrible pitchers going, it's certainly a dangerous game to take the under.

The over is 16-9 this season when the Angels are underdogs.
