Blue Jays vs Yankees MLB Preview
Last season, the Blue Jays took nine of the 13 regular-season meetings against the Yankees and that carried over into the postseason.
The Blue Jays defeated the Yankees in four games in the ALDS, in the first playoff meeting between the franchises. However, despite late rallies in the ninth inning, they dropped the first two games of this series, 7-6 on Monday and 5-4 last night.
The Blue Jays have won 89 games in four of the last five seasons and made the playoffs in three of them. They have some work to do to get back there as they enter tonight's game, six games below .500 and 11.5 games back in the AL East.
They have dropped six of their last 10 games and will need to win the final two games to salvage a split in this series.
However, the good news is Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is starting to heat up again.
After hitting just .118 in May, Guerrero broke out of his slump with a home run on Sunday against the Tigers and he has three hits, runs, and runs batted in through the first two games of this series. In 50 games at Yankee Stadium, he is slashing .302/.366/.615 with 16 home runs and 31 runs batted in.
Additionally, the Blue Jays will have Trey Yesavage starting tonight.
The 22-year-old has recorded six strikeouts in each of his last three starts and has a 1.40 ERA thus far this season. The Yankees are very familiar with him after he no-hit them in 5 and 1/3 innings while striking out 11 in Game 2 of the ALDS.
In that ALDS, the Blue Jays had their way with the Yankees' pitching staff. One pitcher that did somewhat hold them at bay was Cam Schlittler, who allowed four runs (two earned) in 6 and 1/3 innings in Game 4.
He fared much better there than in his two regular-season starts when he had an 8.10 ERA in two starts of just 6 and 2/3 innings. The Blue Jays are hitting .438 off Schlittler, with Guerrero being 5-for-8, but they will have an improved version as he has leveled up this season.
Schlittler is 6-1 this season and leads the MLB with 1.35 ERA while ranking second with a 0.78 WHIP. He ranks in the 90th percentile or better in xERA, fastball velocity, chase percentage, strikeout rate, and walk rate.
He has 68 strikeouts in 60 innings, but those may be hard to come by tonight with the Blue Jays being the league's most difficult to punch out. That may keep his pitch count down.
Last night, the Yankees' offense got a surprising jolt from Ryan McMahon, who tied the game with a three-run home run and snapped a 0-for-24 stretch in the process.
McMahon is hitting just .194 with a .579 OPS this season, but he has fared much better at home, continuing his home and road splits as a Rockie. At Yankee Stadium, he is hitting .275 with a .903 OPS and three of his four home runs.
Ben Rice gave the Yankees the lead for good in the fifth inning with his 16th home run of the year. He tied Aaron Judge for the team lead as they became just the second Yankees duo with 16 home runs before the team's 50th game with game 50 being tonight for them.
Judge has been sitting on 16 home runs since last Sunday, so he may be due for another soon.

Blue Jays vs Yankees MLB Pick to Make
Yesavage's start to the season was delayed as he did not debut until April 28th. He struck out three against Boston and has since recorded six strikeouts in each of his last three starts. His last start was particularly encouraging as he worked six innings against the Tigers.
Tonight, he gets a premium matchup against the Yankees, who are fifth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers. His teammate, Dylan Cease, had nine last night and he had his own success against the Yankees last season.
Meanwhile, Schlittler has completed five innings in every start this season. With his arm more built up, he has completed six innings in five of his last six starts and he was one out away from doing so in the other.
He is now averaging six innings per start for the season and six more will give him 18 outs tonight. The Blue Jays are 25th in wRC+ against right-handed pitchers, so he may be set to dominate again.
Pick: Trey Yesavage Over 5.5 Strikeouts + Cam Schlittler Over 17.5 Outs Recorded (+174)
