Bethune-Cookman vs Grambling College Basketball Betting Preview
Bethune-Cookman Basketball
Bethune-Cookman enters this SWAC matchup with a 15-13 overall record.
It was a discouraging start to the Wildcats’ campaign, as they won just three of the team’s first 13 contests. Since then, though, Bethune-Cookman has completely turned its season around, going 12-3 over the last 15 games.
The Wildcats have never reached the NCAA Tournament in program history, but they're leading the SWAC standings with just three games remaining in the regular season.
Leading the charge for their offense is 6-foot-6 senior guard Jakobi Heady, who's posting an impressive 18 points per contest. Heady is having a stellar campaign, and if Bethune-Cookman is to go dancing, it'll be on the back of its senior leader.
The Wildcats' backcourt boasts a lot of size and athleticism, with 6-foot-4 junior guard Arterio Morris also having a great season.
Bethune-Cookman’s late-season heater can be attributed to the phenomenal play from its experienced guard play.
Bethune-Cookman is posting over 75 points per game this season, while leading the SWAC in total offense. While the Wildcats are excelling on the offensive end of the floor, the same can't be said of the defense, which is allowing over 77 points per contest.
Grambling Basketball
It's been a largely mediocre season for Grambling (12-15 overall record).
The Tigers got off to a rough start to the season, winning just three of their first nine contests. It's been an up-and-down road for Grambling since, as it ranks eighth in the conference standings at 6-8.
Head coach Patrick Crarey II is in his first season at the helm, having just been hired this offseason after a one-year stint at Florida A&M.
While it's surely been a subpar season for the Tigers, their starting lineup is very well-rounded, with four of their five starters posting double-figure scoring averages. Crarey’s bunch is scoring over 71 points per game behind the play of its 6-foot-6 star freshman, Antonio Munoz.
Munoz has been very effective as an interior post presence, with the freshman mostly struggling to convert from beyond the arc. Munoz is off to a great start to his collegiate career, and if Grambling is to make a run in the SWAC Tournament in a couple of weeks, it'll be behind the stellar play of its freshman.
Like Bethune-Cookman, the Tigers’ backcourt features a ton of size, with both starting guards standing at 6-foot-6. Seniors Jamil Muttilib and Derrius Ward are posting 11 and 10 points per game, respectively.
While Grambling’s backcourt boasts substantial size and length, the team as a whole plays very small, without a single player in its starting lineup standing above 6-foot-7. In a rather odd lineup, all five starters have very similar statures.
On the other end of the floor, the Tigers have allowed opponents to score 71 points on average, maintaining a scoring margin close to zero.
Bethune-Cookman vs. Grambling Betting Analysis
In the first meeting between these SWAC foes earlier this season, the Tigers fell by nine points on the road, making Thursday night’s matchup a big revenge spot for Grambling.
While the Tigers are coming off a home victory, Bethune-Cookman is scorching over its last few weeks of play, with the Wildcats very determined to reign supreme in the SWAC Tournament and make the program’s first NCAA Tournament in school history.
While I do often incorporate revenge narratives in my handicaps, I just feel better backing the superior team in this matchup, which is clearly Bethune-Cookman.
The Wildcats appear to have finally hit their stride, and I wouldn't be surprised if Theus’ squad carries this momentum into the conference tournament in a couple of weeks and does, in fact, emerge victorious.
My Pick: Bethune-Cookman ML -115
