BYU Basketball

You're going to hear about BYU this season because of AJ Dybantsa, the nation's top recruit and projected top pick in next June's NBA draft. Yet one player, no matter how good, does not create a top 10 team.

BYU is absolutely one of the 10 best teams in the sport for reasons that go far beyond Dybantsa.

Richie Saunders is as overqualified a second banana as you're going to find in college basketball. He scored 16.5 points per game last season, is over 1,110 for his career and has outscored Dybantsa so far this season.

His game has elevated as more attention has been paid elsewhere, and Saunders has the shot to make teams pay.

Elsewhere, Robert Wright III was a coup in the transfer portal. He was on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team at Baylor, posting 11.5 points and 4.2 assists per game in Waco.

Add in Kennard Davis Jr., who scored 16.5 per game at Southern Illinois last season, and BYU has tons of firepower around Dybantsa, with a group of returning, experienced role players rounding out the lineup.

And while I've gushed about the rest of the roster, Dybantsa is very much the headliner. He's yet to have a night that makes him look like a freshman, with at least 17 points and six rebounds in every game thus far.

BYU's only loss came on the road at UConn — a raucous atmosphere — by just two points. The Cougars boast a neutral site win over Villanova and an absolute drubbing of Wisconsin in Salt Lake City.

The top tier of the Big 12 is stacked, but BYU is very much worthy of inclusion in that group.

Miami (FL) Basketball

Like so many new coaches in the modern era of college basketball, Jai Lucas was tasked with filling an entire roster. The Hurricanes are one of the handful of teams in college basketball without a single returnee from last season's team still on campus.

In the days of the transfer portal, that's not a necessity for success. Lucas nabbed a big fish from the portal, bringing Indiana star Malik Reneau to Miami.

He was joined by Tre Donaldson from Michigan and Tru Washington from New Mexico, and suddenly Lucas had the backbone of a team capable of reaching the postseason.

So far, so good. The Hurricanes have taken care of business in five routs of lesser competition, with a lone loss coming on the road at reigning champ Florida.

As we track this team early in the season, it's important to note what style Lucas will impose on his team as a first time head coach. To date, Miami has been very strong on the defensive end of the floor, relying the rim protection of Reneau and TCU transfer Ernest Udeh Jr.

On the offensive end of the floor, Miami has looked for production inside the 3-point arc, ranking 336th in 3-point rate. No Hurricane makes more than 1.6 3s per game. Compare that to BYU, which has four players at or above that mark.

BYU vs. Miami (FL) Betting Analysis

Until BYU shows otherwise, the Cougars should be considered one of the best teams in college basketball.

This spread reflects that to some degree, yet I still like the Cougs to cover.

This game is being played on a neutral court in Florida, but that shouldn't give Miami any sort of advantage. These Feast Week events are sparsely attended, especially on Thanksgiving Day.

Plus, BYU's fans often travel to support their Cougars.

One other notable stat to watch: Miami's opponents so far this season have made the lowest percentage of free throws in the country, not even hitting 60%.

That number will swing back upward, and this is a perfect opportunity.

Dybantsa has been excellent at drawing contact, with Saunders and Wright also capable of earning and sinking their freebies.

My Pick: BYU -9.5 or Better
