Chattanooga Basketball

Like its Monday night counterpart, Chattanooga had quite the busy offseason, completely overhauling its roster from last season, with the Mocs featuring 11 new players.

After consecutive impressive campaigns under head coach Dan Earl (including an NIT title in 2024), the Mocs posted their first sub-.500 record under him, finishing last season with a 13-19 overall record.

Earl took a similar approach to Louisville head coach Pat Kelsey this past offseason, focusing on adding size to his frontcourt after injuries significantly depleted the Mocs’ interior depth last season.

Chattanooga’s roster now boasts a whopping 13 players standing 6-foot-4 or taller, headlined by Earl’s securing 7-foot center John Fleeman as the premier player in its incoming 2026 freshman class.

The Mocs also landed 6-foot-10 Pepperdine transfer Yonatan Levy, rounding out a frontcourt now boasting tremendous size that should make a sizable impact for Earl’s bunch at both ends of the floor.

Chattanooga also added international talent, landing several players with professional overseas experience, including 6-foot-7 forward Lenny Anigbata and 6-foot guard Kobe McDowell-White.

Earl also did a fantastic job retaining much of last year’s talent, with sophomore guard Tate Darner named to the preseason All-Conference Southern team.

Darner is just one of several players who are returning from last season’s roster, but he's the sole returning talent who's projected to start for the Mocs in their season opener.

I have extremely high expectations for Kelsey’s 11th-ranked Cardinals this season after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign that was largely defined by freshman point guard Mikel Brown Jr.’s frequent unavailability.

After losing eight of their nine top scorers from last year’s roster, with Brown and Ryan Conwell going to the NBA, Louisville completely overhauled its entire roster, leading to the Cardinals boasting the top-rated transfer portal class in the entire country.

In the biggest move of the transfer portal window, Kelsey secured former Kansas forward Flory Bidunga, instantly adding size and physicality to the frontcourt at both ends of the floor.

Bidunga had a phenomenal season under Bill Self, averaging over 13 points and nine rebounds per game.

He headlines an elite portal class that also includes Oregon’s Jackson Shelstad, North Carolina’s Seth Trimble and former Razorback Karter Knox.

Shelstad and Trimble should immediately give Louisville elite guard play after losing its top two scorers in Brown and Conwell.

Both Louisville guards averaged over 14 points per game last season for their respective teams, and add even more experience to a roster that's absolutely loaded from top to bottom.

Kelsey also did a spectacular job securing talent from the incoming 2026 freshman class, landing 6-foot-11 center Obinna Ekezie, who should make an immediate impact for a Cardinal frontcourt that will undoubtedly be amongst the best in all of college basketball.

While the team thrived on the offensive end of the floor last season, the Cards were quite vulnerable defensively, which led to Kelsey taking a very aggressive approach to adding interior size, physicality and elite rim protection.

Though Kelsey’s bunch was also extremely overhyped heading into last season, I think the Cardinals’ refocus on defensive efficiency will make an immediate impact for a very well-balanced lineup.

That said, I'm officially a huge believer and I'm buying all of Louisville stock.

Chattanooga vs. Louisville Pick, Betting Analysis

While both teams could take time to develop, I expect the Cardinals to gel much faster given the level of talent Kelsey added.

The Mocs’ new-look frontcourt should be very effective in SoCon play this season, but they unfortunately draw an extremely difficult matchup to start the season.

Though I think Chattanooga could hang around early, I expect a hostile road environment at Louisville’s KFC Yum Center and the Cardinals’ superior frontcourt to result in Kelsey’s bunch ultimately running away with this one.

As of writing, Louisville -29.5 is available at Fanatics.

Pick: Louisville -29.5
