Oakland Basketball

Greg Kampe is notorious for playing in-state high-major schools. He’s not backing away from any smoke; that’s for sure.

This will be a tall task for the Golden Grizzlies after their brutal exhibition season. They lost by 14 to Tennessee State and 39 to Cincinnati.

Some of the better Oakland teams in recent memory had terrific guard play, but that doesn’t seem to be the case this year.

The starting point guard is RJ Taylor, a transfer from Northern Iowa who averaged 2.5 points per game. He’s more of a playmaker than scorer, so some of the other Grizzlies like Nassim Mashhour and Brady Swartz will have to play well off of Taylor.

Swartz and Mashhour are the keys to unlocking this Oakland perimeter game. Last season, Mashhour averaged 9.3 points in his breakout sophomore campaign. Meanwhile, Swartz is a bit of a mismatch. He can play the three or the four with a 6-foot-8 frame and strong shooting touch.

When Horizon League play rolls around, the Grizzlies' calling card will be their bigs. The star of exhibition season was Chris Fields Jr., who scored 22 against Cincinnati. Kampe can also call on RMU transfer Josh Hill and New Hampshire transfer Belal El Shakery for key minutes.

Kampe is known for his zone defense, and one of the drawbacks of playing zone is rebounding. That stung the Grizzlies last season, as they finished 324th in defensive rebound rate.

They have a similar amount of size this season, so there might just be games where they get crushed on the glass. This could be one of them.

Michigan Basketball

Fresh off the national title, Michigan has changed a lot. Firstly, Dusty May is gone, and Mike Boynton will take over as head coach.

Also, the entire frontcourt trio of Aday Mara, Yaxel Lendeborg and Morez Johnson cashed in and were lottery picks in the NBA draft.

Not everyone is gone, though. The Wolverines return three key perimeter players: Point guard Elliot Cadeau, the Final Four Most Outstanding Player, breakout candidate Trey McKenney and glue-guy Roddy Gayle.

Cadeau changed the narrative around his game from disappointment at UNC to one of the sport's top point guards at Michigan. With Michigan's top-three scorers gone, Cadeau could be saddled with a bigger scoring load.

The burning question for Michigan: How will its interior look after losing Mara, Lendeborg and Johnson? I feel good about the duo of Moustapha Thiam and JP Estrella.

Thiam averaged 12 and six for Cincinnati, and Estrella averaged 10 and six for Tennessee. Will this duo be as good? Probably not, but it should be an upper-tier tandem in the Big Ten.

One of the things that made last season's bigs so valuable was their ability to work well with Cadeau and also dominate the offensive glass.

Oakland vs. Michigan Pick, Betting Analysis

The line opened up at Michigan -28.5 and dropped to -26.5 at the time of writing.

I want to lay the points with the Wolverines.

Not only are there some growing pains in the guard department for Oakland, but I also expect its bigs to struggle with Michigan's interior length.

If Fields and the other bigs struggle, Oakland will then have to focus on a perimeter game, which allows Michigan to run in transition and create an uneven margin.

Pick: Michigan -26.5 (Play to -28)
