Wofford vs. Tennessee
It won't be swept under the rug that this Tennessee team got its rear end demolished by Duke in an exhibition, losing 103-63 on Oct. 20.
We are nowhere near March, and Rick Barnes' team already has this writer a bit worried.
However, the Vols should be fine against this Wofford team. The Vols added plenty of offensive firepower (Juke Harris) that could finally get the program to where the hype has suggested it belongs for years.
And that offensive talent should pop off against a team ranked more than 240 spots below the Volunteers.
There are some concerns about these newcomers being defensive liabilities, but with Barnes at the helm, it would be baffling not to see major improvements on that side of the ball from the newbies.
With questions surrounding the defense and just how good this offense can be, I don't love the under as much as I normally would in a Tennessee game.
However, this line is too low, and getting smaller. The Volunteers should annihilate the Terriers.
Pick: Tennessee -26.5
Hampton vs. Georgia Tech
By Evan Abrams
Georgia Tech begins the Scott Cross era on Tuesday by hosting Hampton in Atlanta, GA.
The Yellow Jackets have more questions than answers, considering they were picked to finish last in the preseason ACC poll.
However, my Bet Labs Sports Insights system — "Opening Home Favs" — actually says that the play for this game is Georgia Tech to cover the 15.5-point spread against a Hampton team projected to sit near the bottom of the CAA standings.
This system has a 4% return on investment all-time, with a 54% hit rate.
And to give you a greater understanding before placing a bet, here's what the background of the system consists of:
"This system targets opening home favorites in college basketball, focusing on teams playing their very first game of the season.
These teams are at home, entering with a clean slate, and often coming off a previous year where they had fewer than 20 wins.
The idea is that early in the season, oddsmakers may undervalue these programs, especially against teams with more preseason buzz or established reputations.
Playing at home offers a comfort advantage, and being listed as a favorite or pick implies early market confidence despite modest prior results.
With totals capped at 149.5, this typically captures games expected to be moderately paced rather than high-scoring shootouts.
Historically, these home teams tend to outperform the spread as they seek to set the tone for a bounce-back season and reward early bettors backing them in their opener."
Pick: Georgia Tech -15.5
Cleveland State vs. Missouri
Dennis Gates has often received plenty of criticism in Columbia, as he hasn't advanced past the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32 in his four years as head coach.
However, this might be his best team yet.
The Tigers have McDonald's All-American and five-star recruit Jason Crowe Jr. (eighth overall in the ESPN top-100) alongside an assortment of talented transfer portal additions like Jaylen Carey, Kennard Davis Jr., Bryson Tiller and Jamier Jones.
Yes, there are question marks regarding how good Crowe will be out of the gate and how the pieces fit together, but the Tigers addressed a major weakness — rebounding — with Carey and Tiller.
Carey won't play in this game, but Mark Mitchell is currently eligible, giving them experience and another key piece at 6-foot-9.
On the flip side, Cleveland State is projected to finish near the bottom of the Horizon League and also has a brand new roster.
Even without Carey, Missouri's talent advantage and early-season hype give the Tigers a major upper hand when it comes to covering this number.
And on top of that, one of my favorite Bet Labs Sports Insights systems — "Starting a New Favs" — says that Missouri -25.5 is the play.
"This system identifies college basketball teams that open the season as favorites despite performing poorly against the spread the previous year.
These programs are often overlooked by the betting market due to their past struggles, yet the opening line reflects renewed optimism from oddsmakers.
The idea is that teams with low public confidence but market support in Game 1 are primed for early-season correction, as new rosters, improved coaching, or offseason adjustments reset expectations."
Pick: Missouri -25.5
