Georgetown vs Butler College Basketball Betting Preview
Georgetown Basketball
Georgetown comes into this game hoping to assert that a recent stretch of good basketball isn't just a fluke. The Hoyas beat Marquette in their first conference game, but then lost seven straight conference games, broken up only by a home victory against Coppin State.
However, since then, Georgetown fought off that 1-7 start and has won its last two games against Providence and DePaul.
The Hoyas like to play at a very slow pace (275th in KenPom's adjusted tempo), and they excel in forcing opponents to use most of the shot clock – Georgetown, on average, forces the eighth-longest opponent possession time in the country at 18.6 seconds.
Big man Vince Iwuchukwu has been a steady scorer, putting up double-digit scoring outputs in five of the last six games. However, during the Hoyas' stretch of hit-or-miss play, the guard play has largely been indicative of how the overall game will go.
KJ Lewis and Malik Mack have also scored in double figures in five of the last six games. However, in the two recent wins, Mack scored 16 points and 13 points, while Lewis scored six and 26 points.
Those two also combined for 31 points in a tight overtime loss against Creighton and 24 points in a close loss against Seton Hall.
If Mack and Lewis are both on their game, it's hard for opponents to stop both of them and protect the paint simultaneously. Although when Mack and Lewis are average or worse, Georgetown really struggles, as evidenced by their 51-point outing when the duo only combined for 17 points.
The Hoyas have to get those two rolling early to have a chance in this game.
Butler Basketball
Butler lost four games in a row to start Big East play 1-5, but the Bulldogs are a much better team than that record indicated, and they bounced back accordingly. Butler won three straight games to get to a much more respectable 4-5 conference record before losing to St. John's on the road.
The Bulldogs' style of play made the Red Storm a bad matchup, however. I won't put too much stock into that loss, choosing instead to look at the three-game winning streak heading into that game as the focal point.
Based on those three games, Butler has figured out more ways to win than just relying on physicality and occasional good shooting nights from beyond the arc. Still, a return to the bread-and-butter formula might be the best route to beating Georgetown.
There are two specific keys for how the Bulldogs can swing this game squarely in their favor by returning to their normal style of play: Butler has to get active on the offensive glass and get to the free-throw line at high rates.
The good news is that the Bulldogs are 39th in offensive rebound rate and 23rd in free throws per field goal attempted, according to KenPom. On the other side, the Hoyas are just average at preventing both of those two, ranking 170th in offensive rebounds allowed and 194th in free throws/field goals attempted by opponents.
Butler shouldn't struggle to achieve either of those main goals in this matchup, and if the Bulldogs are successful, they should be in a comfortable spot for a victory at home.
Georgetown vs. Butler Betting Analysis
Georgetown has potentially explosive guards, but Butler has the personnel to counter that, and also a potential advantage down low due to Michael Ajayi's unique skillset and ability to get offensive rebounds (he averages 3.4 per game) and get to the free-throw line (he averages 6.9 free-throw attempts per game).
Lewis is a good scorer and an elite defender, but one of the ways to limit his impact is to get him to commit as much energy as possible on the defensive end. I think Finley Bizjack and the rest of the Butler backcourt can do enough to wear Lewis down over the course of the game, and he won't be able to go off as he has in some recent games.
The Bulldogs are clearly the better team, and with home-court advantage, I think Butler wins outright, and I have a fair amount of confidence they will cover the spread.
My Pick: Butler -6 (Play to -6.5)
