St. John's vs Iowa State College Basketball Betting Preview

St. John's Basketball

St. John’s entered the season as the clear preseason favorite to win the Big East. The Red Storm received seven of 10 first-place votes in the coaches’ poll and were also ranked fifth in the nation.

They enter Feast Week with a 3-1 record, and their lone loss has most definitely left a sour taste in their mouths.

That Alabama loss might have been the best thing for them, because they finish off their non-conference slate with Iowa State, Baylor, Mississippi and Kentucky.

They'll continue to play fast. While Iowa State has picked up its pace this season, speed will be an advantage for the Red Storm.

As a team mostly built from the transfer portal, they were able to keep Zuby Ejiifor, who was their biggest contributor from a season ago. That experience — coupled with all the newcomers — makes this team a dangerous one as the season progresses under Rick Pitino.

Iowa State Basketball

This Iowa State team seems to continually be undervalued. It's made the tournament in four straight seasons, including a pair of Sweet 16 appearances.

From a continuity perspective, the Cyclones might have the advantage in this matchup. This is T.J. Otzelberger's fifth season at the helm, and despite the NIL transfer portal, the Clones have been able to keep their core.

Tamin Lipsey is a senior point guard and Iowa State's career steals leader. He’s averaging 19 points per game and is joined by Joshua Jefferson and Milan Momcilovic, who are averaging 18 and 15 points, respectively.

This Iowa State team is very capable of winning its conference, and its only hurdle will be health. It’s a team that's been unable to stay healthy over the last few seasons.

St. John's vs. Iowa State Betting Analysis

Coming into this game, this Iowa State is at full health and it has more returning production to pair with new roster additions, which might give it a few advantages.

I think Iowa State will placate the Red Storm and play fast, up-tempo basketball. The Cyclones will use an aggressive defense to create some fast-break opportunities. Iowa State has the third-best 2-point field goal percentage in the nation, thanks to its defense creating chaotic sequences.

Overall, the roster makeup of these teams has me leaning into the Cyclones. This spread is currently -1.5 (at the time of writing), but I would rather be in on the moneyline. I won’t lay more than -140, but anything else, I’ll be confident in Iowa State.

The -1.5 at -110 isn’t necessarily a stay away, but I’d rather lay more juice for a moneyline win.

My Pick: Iowa State ML -135 (Play to -140)
